Heaven on Earth

Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

I don’t know if any of you got a chance to participate in one of the many Open Door picnics this summer. If you missed it this year, make sure to sign up for next year. You won’t regret a minute of your time with these precious kids. Randy and I took the afternoon off and joined Sean and Audra at the park for a pizza picnic! It was the younger kids’ last picnic for the summer and they were having so much fun it was hard to keep up!

I never have done well with outdoor games so I brought paint and paper for my part in our afternoon of fun. After a little direction they all happily scattered to make their pretty paintings and I wandered around looking for anyone who needed some guidance.

One precious girl wanted some help with her painting and wanted to paint a flower. We looked around and found some flowers in the park and went to observe them and learn how to draw them for her painting. I sat down on the sidewalk next to the flowers and began to sketch. Soon another girl popped on the scene to watch and learn. Before I knew it I had one girl nearly in my lap and the other sitting close and quietly watching.

This is heaven I thought; spending a quiet moment with two of God’s precious children, just snuggling and cherishing the beauty around us. It was like getting a shot of pure love. No wonder Jesus commanded his disciples to let the children come to him. Jesus poured out so much of his energy and love each day ministering to the masses, I bet moments with the children charged his batteries and gave him the love he needed to keep on going.

Colorado Summers have so much to keep us busy, that I think we forget to just stop and hang out in a park with a kid on our lap, imagining the clouds as dragons and castles, remembering that Jesus loved to hang out with the keepers of his Kingdom.

Abba, I know we can be exhausting…keeping up with all our requests, listening to our worries…Help us to remember to just spend a lazy summer day cloud watching with you. Just snuggling up and offering you our childlike love.
