Having Fun?

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Always being joyful, no matter what’s going on in my life isn’t necessarily the way I find myself. I worry about my kids. I don’t always eat healthy. I find lots of excuses not to exercise. My house could use a good cleaning. I stress when I feel like I have too much to do and not enough time to do it. My mom lives in another state and her health isn’t the best. The economy stinks and wondering about money and paying the bills lurks around the edges of my days. And, have you noticed the days getting shorter and colder? Where’s the joy in any of this?

I ran across something called the fun theory. It’s actually a deal sponsored by Volkswagen that asks the question: will people change their behavior if fun is part of the equation? Watch this video:

Maybe this is what Paul’s talking about. Yea, there’s a lot of stuff we “should” be doing and our brains like to convince us that these things are no fun, drudgery and hopeless. But Jesus wants us to rejoice, pray and be grateful. It’s our hearts that Jesus wants to transform. Jesus wants us to have abundant life (John 10:10) and a full life is one brimming over with joy, prayer and gratitude. Jesus and Paul want us to get out of our heads and into our hearts.

What can you turn into fun today?
How can you integrate prayer into what you’re doing right now?
What do you give thanks for at this very moment?

Loving God, help us to live lives full of joy, prayer and gratitude. May we be beacons of your light through practicing a fun and thankful relationship with you, amen.
