Happy Valentine's Day All the Time

I just recently walked into a Walmart and this holiday is so commercialized beyond belief. I see red hearts, white hearts, paper hearts, candy hearts, heart -shaped boxes full of chocolate, stuffed animals holding hearts, and valentine’s cards of all kinds. That is some list. Those small candy tart hearts might look good but I don’t think they taste good. Those red hearts outlined by white lace probably make me want to throw up. There is just too much money spent that we are missing the point. Not only should we show care and love to that special someone in our life, we should show care and love to people in general. That is why I feel there shouldn’t be a Valentine’s Day, but the candy companies will be in an uproar if that happened.

I think God feels that there should not be a day like that either. There is no Valentine’s Day marked on God’s calendar even though He doesn’t have a calendar in the first place. Every day is Valentine’s Day to Him. He sends you a valentine every day of our lives to remind you that He loves you. The Bible is just a total love letter that was written for His people. No matter what you say, what you do, and how you feel, God will always be there to love you and be there for you. Sometimes we just miss catching His valentine due to struggles in life, greed to get ahead of other people, hate for other people, and etc. He sends it in a very low and soft voice but we have to listen for it with all the loudness, tension, hustle and bustle, stress and pressure of this world.

School kids throughout the years have it rough during this day. When I was in school, I felt like Charlie Brown in which he got no valentines from classmates. I think it is very demoralizing and depressing. I wish kids would hand out candy that says “God loves you” to any kid walking in the hallways. Then it would grow into kids helping other kids maybe once a week. Then maybe it could turn into no kids being bullied any day of the year. Then there would be no reason to have Valentine’s Day on the calendar. That would be nice.

Some couples go all out and paint the town with hearts and flowers. It’s nice for one day but we should strive for more than that. Some couples don’t do anything at all. We should definitely strive for more than that. Couples should make Valentines every day of the year. That would be nice. Husbands should strive to show love and care to wives. Take her to a show, ballet, and/or art museum to be partners in what she is interested. Husbands should see another side of life than sports and action movies. Take care of her like Christ takes care of the Church. Wives should be supportive and respect husbands. Don’t put him down and complain about him because he does things wrong. Sometimes he does things right in another way. Husbands need respect because they always want to be a knight in shining armor.

Ok, I am not going to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day. I am going to pray for you that you treat every day like it is Valentine’s Day. Show care and love for all the people around you, the ones you do know, and the ones you don’t know.

19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

In Christ,
Stan Yee
