Greed

Today’s Daily Texts invite us to consider greed and what it means when things get in the way of life in the kingdom of God. Because the Bible is not just a book of old stories and platitudes:

The Bible is not a book for the faint of heart. It is a book full of all the greed and glory and violence and tenderness and sex and betrayal that benefits mankind. It is not the collection of pretty little anecdotes mouthed by pious little church mice. It does not so much nibble at our shoe as it cuts to the heart and splits the marrow from bone to bone. It does not give us answers fitted to our smaller minded questions but truth that goes beyond what we even know to ask. - Rich Mullins

Today’s Old Testament Verse

Woe to him who piles up stolen goods and makes himself wealthy by extortion! How long must this go on?
– Habakkuk 2:6 NIV

Today’s New Testament Verse

Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.
– Luke 12:15

Today’s Prayer

Redeemer of my life, you give me today your prophet Habakkuk who knew bewilderment and affliction. Through his trials you transformed him into a man of strong faith. Encourage me to listen as he did. Use the raw materials of prayer and worship to follow his example. May I be on guard from any distractions. Amen.

Join us in praying the Daily Texts each morning as we engage with this book that cuts to the heart.
