God's Calling

This time of year you often hear the phrase “New Year, New You!” And like everyone else, I am waiting for the New Me to appear. It also gives opportunity to reflect on what God is calling each of us to become. This month at church we are discussing the book of Jeremiah, with next week’s sermon to be based on the following verse:

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5

In this verse, God is speaking to Jeremiah and telling him “you can do it.” That is definitely a “New Year, New You” type of plan. For God is telling Jeremiah he will become a great prophet, of which he became. And that was in God’s plan before Jeremiah was born!  I’m most certainly impressed by the long range planning. I’m writing my devotion the night before it is due.

While God might not have in mind for us to become prophets, He does call us in many everyday ways.  Some might think they have never been called.  I challenge you to think of a time when something just mysteriously fell into place out of pure coincidence. Or was it coincidence? Perhaps a call from God? An answered prayer? Or a footprint in the sand, where God was carrying us through?

As we start this “New Year, New You” time of year or NY2, it is also a time to pray our kids might be touched and inspired to follow God’s plan and pursue the call that God has prepared for them.  Prayers for obedience to the call will encourage growth and fulfillment. We are the mentors and younger ones are watching and modeling our actions and behaviors, whether they are our children or someone else’s.  It does take a village and sometimes the other village members are the most influential in a child’s life. So be influential when you are in a position to share the love and light.

As you seek to find the New You in the New Year, reflect on those coincidental moments and perhaps consider if they might be at least a nudge from God. It might be something you never have considered trying or doing or it might be something that you need to encourage others to consider.  Either way, keep your God Calling antennas on high alert or you might miss the opportunity for the New You that He has planned, just for you.

Dear God, we sometimes become busy in our everyday lives and forget to listen for your calling.  Help us to spend time to listen and to act on those moments. Help us to use to serve others through our talents and gifts. We give thanks for the many blessing you have bestowed upon us. Amen
