God You Know Me

I love to turn to the Psalms, the songs and prayers of the Bible, at the changing of the seasons or when my life feels unstable.  I know many of the Psalms are attributed to David, but I have a few books where others have taken some of the Psalms and written them in their own words.  Some of these really open up these songs and prayers for me.

In worship tomorrow, Sunday, Aug 11, we’ll explore the gift of song in our lives from the gifts of the Psalms and other music.  And, we’ll have a central focus on the “Back to School” theme.  I hope you can join us to pray over, (or be prayed over) students, teachers, staff, schools and supplies.  9 or 10:30 am!

One of the Psalm paraphrase books I turn to frequently is Prayers Before an Awesome God by David Haas. Here is an adaptation of Psalm 139 he’s written that seems appropriate for this time of year of back to school.

you know me better
than I know myself.
Wherever I go
you are right there.
If I walk one way,
you walk with me;
and wherever I have been,
you know it well.
While I am trying to figure out
what I am going to say,
you already know what it is.
You place your hand on me,
and I feel loved.
It is too much to take in!

Is there no way to hide from you?
Is there any place where I can escape?
I go high—you are there.
I go down low—you are there.

If I could fly, you would be nearby;
If I were to swim miles and miles,
you would take hold of me
and set me in the right direction.

You have made every part of me;
you were there creating me
in my mother’s womb
before I was born.
All this is much more than I can fathom!
You watched every step of how I was formed;
you saw my body grow,
all according to your plan.
You knew the direction of my life,
even before my life began.
you mind is so deep--
beyond my understanding!

Find me,
study me,
and look deeply into my thoughts.
Lead me, God.
Lead me.

We may not all be going back to school this month, but we can all find inspiration in new beginnings and start anew again in our habits and our thoughts.  Jesus will lead us.
