God Showing Up & Showing Off

It had been one of those “Wild World of Sports” weeks, the “thrill of victory” along with “the agony of defeat.” The great news… it’s Friday!

The alarm goes off 5am. Snooze alarm once, twice, and now the third time. Decision time, go or not? OK, let’s go I decide, “get up, get moving”!

I arrive at Panera Bread for Mens’ Bible study, order coffee and settle in. I grab my seat, look around and notice that the other Bible Study group that is normally there is “missing.” I also notice a woman sitting face forward toward our group, she like many others, is working on her notebook computer. A few minutes later, I noticed she has changed her position and now has her back to us.

We begin the Bible Study, and I remember that Claudia has been asking for a picture of the group. “Darn” I think, “didn’t bring my camera, but I do have the camera in the phone.” I get up to take the picture and the woman happens to be returning to her seat after getting a refill, says “I can take the picture if you want, that way you can be in the picture as well.” “Great”, I reply, picture taken “mission accomplished.”

At the conclusion of the Bible Study, at just the right moment, the woman shows up at our table. She says “I want to thank you guys, I am a Christian and I have to admit, I was eavesdropping on your bible study.” She goes on to tell us that “my husband lost his job yesterday and your Bible Study reminded me that this is all in the hands of Jesus.” Wow! Her words hit me! Makes me think of Pastor Dave’s quote “sometimes God shows up and shows off!”

"By evangelism I mean reaching out to others in Christian love, identifying with them, caring for them, listening to the them, and sharing faith with them in such a way that they will freely respond and want to commit themselves to trust, love, and obey God as a disciple of Jesus Christ and a member of his servant community, the church"
