Go for the Gold

Go for the gold!

We love Missy Franklin because she brought home to Colorado a lot of medals from the Olympics.  We all dream of being in “first place”, winning and being the best.  We set goals to “shoot for the gold” and place ambition as a valued quality.

What does Jesus say about this?

“So you want first place? Then take the last place. Be the servant of all.”
(Matt 9:35 The Msg)

Last place means first place?  Huh?  This doesn’t compute in our world today.  Doesn’t Jesus want us to do our best?  Of course he does, but he wants us to remember that when we follow him, it’s not about us and what accolades we get.  It’s about doing our best to Love God, Love People and Serve the World.  Jesus puts his focus on the lost, the neglected, the least and the last.  And, that’s where he wants our focus to be, too.

We really are going for the gold when we reach out and make kids at Paris Elementary in Aurora our priority. We can feel like we’re standing on the podium when we engage in relationships with kids and parents at Rev’s Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives.  We can feel the adrenalin rush when serving with Confluence; Love, Light and Melody; Rock Canyon High School; or any of our ministry partners.  I think maybe Jesus knew what he was talking about.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow in worship at 9 or 10:30 as Pastor Dave explores this text in Mark 9:3-37 and talks about the vision of GGCC.

God bless you,
