Giving It All Up

What can’t you live without?

I’ve got a lot of stuff. I’ve got stuff I haven’t even looked at it in years. I’m trying to pare down my stuff. It takes time. I think I’m not attached to things, but it’s difficult trying to decide what I “must” keep and what I can let go of. And really, most of the “must keep” stuff isn’t all that necessary.

Most of the time I can’t live without my phone AKA computer in my pocket. It sure is handy for staying in touch, googling every little question that pops up or taking a photo.

Then there’s the Sunday School answer of what I can’t live out: Jesus. Without Jesus’ mercy and grace, I don’t have a chance at real life. But I freely admit that all my “stuff” can get in the way.

A man asked Jesus about this. Jesus said, “Sell everything you own and give it away to the poor. You will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Luke 18:22 MSG Wow – that seems a little extreme. Give it all up? Jesus goes on to say that when that sounds like a problem to us, we’ve missed the point. We can’t save ourselves by giving up stuff or doing tasks. Only God saves and when we’re ready to let God give us real life, then we’ll be ready for the Kingdom of God.

Jesus said it would be hard, but so worth it. (Luke 18:18-30)

Tomorrow we gather to worship and praise God who we can put our trust in; to remind one another of Jesus’ mercy; and to practice giving and generosity as a life-enabling spiritual practice. See you at 9 or 10:30 am.

Grace and peace,
