Gentle Whisper

“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart…, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper… then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:11-13

So many times I have felt inadequate when I come to God in prayer. It’s not that I don’t know how to pray, but I don’t know how to sit still. It’s not easy to turn off our frantic rushing around. Count the number of times your cell phone rings in a day. Count the number of messages in your voicemail.

God does not roar like a train or shriek like the wind (or cell phone) to get our attention. He does ask us to turn down the noise and surrender some of our time to listen to his gentle voice within us. The great thing is we don’t have to do anything. Can I put God in Control of this time I set apart with him? Am I trying to manipulate the outcome of our prayer time together? I do know when I try to put my cares into His hands and become dependant on Him, what a blessing it is to rest in His presence.

Elijah heard that gentle whisper, that intimate voice of a friend. I think deep down we all long to hear those whispered words in the center of our spirits.

Father God, Whisper to us in that gentle whisper. Put the desire in our hearts to rest in you. Fill us with the wisdom and faith we will need to bring Jesus to a wounded world. Teach us daily to lift up our trust in you. We know you will never force your way into our lives. Help us to surrender a little more to you each day. Amen
