Forgiveness is Life

Forgive.  Forgiveness.

Loaded words.  If there is a need for forgiveness, it means something bad has happened.  Someone has been hurt.  Someone has probably acted selfishly, foolishly, insensitively -- with indifference, intolerance, and violence.  It’s entirely possible that the offending person doesn’t recognize their error.

Forgiveness can be hard work.  We aren’t sure we should forgive.  Sometimes it’s easier to hold onto resentment and pain than to let it go.  Those we need to forgive don’t seek it.  It’s messy.  We don’t take responsibility for the things we need to be forgiven for.

"Forgiveness is the name of love practiced among people who love poorly. The hard truth is that all people love poorly. We need to forgive and be forgiven every day, every hour increasingly. That is the great work of love among the fellowship of the weak that is the human family."              -Henri J.M. Nouwen

But forgiveness is life.  Jesus wants us to have abundant life (John 10:10) and the way he showed us about this is through forgiveness.  When we give and receive forgiveness we have abundant life.

In these divisive and contentious times, may we follow Jesus to be the first to forgive.  May we remember that everyone is fighting a battle, so we can be kind.  May we forgive ourselves and accept Jesus’ forgiveness and grace.  May we gather regularly to remind one another of the gift of forgiveness that is ours to have and to share.

See you tomorrow at 9 or 10:30!
