Dear Forgetful,

On Sunday we will remember our high school graduates. What do you remember about significant days in your life: birthdays, baptisms, confirmations, first communions, graduations, wedding days, and funerals? What do we hope the graduates remember?

“IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME": those are words that we say each week before we share communion. Brick and mortar facilities often have them carved on the front of their communion tables in the church. When you think about it, a great deal of Christian worship is done in service of remembrance. You might think the whole point of most of our singing, reading, preaching as “In remembrance of me.” It is so easy in this life to become distracted, to forget. Amnesia, lack of memory, is always a spiritual challenge for us. So on a weekly basis we gather to recall, to remember.

Bill Hybels, the Senior Pastor of Willow Creek in the greater Chicago area says, “Vision Leaks.” God’s vision for your life is that you live with great joy secure in the identity of Jesus' grace and mercy in an identity that cannot be taken away (John 10:10). However, “vision leaks.” So?

Let us gather this week with a special focus on remembering our high school brothers and sisters who are graduating. May they be blessed with a vivid memory of the risen Jesus who is among us each time we gather.

See John 17:1-11 for further reflection.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J Jensen
