Fewer Words...

Ecclesiastes 5:1-20

“Guard your steps when you go to the house of GOD. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know what they do wrong.Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before GOD. GOD is in heaven and you are on the earth, so let your words be few.  As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words.”

Wow, as my dad used to say, “Put that in your pipe and smoke it!” How often do I listen to a friend or even my wife and immediately reply with words… words… I must say they come easy for me.

My favorite quote by Saint Francis is “Preach the gospel everyday and sometimes use words.” I don’t know where St Francis got this from, but I could see him reading Ecclesiastes 5:2-3 and coming up with this quote… So what do I do… what do I do to change myself, to put this written word into action? For me I hug more, I caress my wife and touch my children when I talk with them, either holding their hand or rubbing their back or just playing and wrestling with them…I try to use words less and actions more, but it isn’t easy!

I was watching TV with my son this last weekend and they had an ad for the new Jay Z CD. The tune they were playing was catchy, but there was something different about the video that I couldn’t quite place, so I asked Carsten why I thought it was weird and he agreed with me… nobody was smiling… weird, huh? We talked about it for a bit and even thought, what’s wrong with smiling? What’s wrong with enjoying and playing and laughing and loving and just letting ourselves go with laughter and smiling?

Ecclesiates 5:18-20, “Then I realized it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the days of life GOD has given him – for this is his lot. Moreover, when GOD gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work – this is a gift from GOD. He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because GOD keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.

May we go forth this day, with gladness of heart, with actions of love, and hope, and faith.

Precious Father, Loving GOD, Holy Spirit we pray to not be quick with our mouth, but quick with a smile, quick with a hug, quick with joy and faith for ourselves and others. Help us to reflect on our gifts and realize everything we have, everything we are, everything we know is from you our Creator, Lord, and Savior! AMEN!
