Fear Is A Four Letter Word

Exodus 1:1-22

Exodus 1:22, “Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.”

FEAR… a four letter word. A powerful word, something to be dreaded, but we all fear and we all react to fear. When I react to fear it takes the form of violence, anger, hatred, or even retribution. Pharaoh feared the Israelites and so he resorted to violence.

Gandhi says “Terrorism and deception are weapons not of the strong, but of the weak.”

If we are strong in our relationship with GOD we will not react to fear in violence, or hate, or anger, but in GOD and through GOD we will react in love.

There is a story about a young warrior student whose teacher told her she had to do battle with fear.  She didn’t want to do this as it was scary and caused her to feel weak and her knees to knock. But the teacher said she had to do it and gave her instruction for the battle.  The day arrived and the warrior student stood on one side and fear stood on the other.  The warrior was feeling very small and fear was looking big and wrathful.  They both had their weapons. The young warrior roused herself and went toward fear, prostrated three times, and asked, “May I have permission to go into battle with you?”  Fear said, “Thank you for showing me so much respect that you ask permission.”  Then the young warrior said, “How can I defeat you?” Fear replied, “My weapons are that I talk fast, and I get very close to your face.  Then you get completely unnerved, and you do whatever I say. If you don’t do what I tell you, I have no power over you. You can listen to me, and you can have respect for me. You can even be convinced by me. But if you don’t do what I say, I have no power.” In that way the student warrior learned how to defeat fear.

FEAR is a four letter word.  We all have fear, we are human and the world is a tough place.  We can and will succumb to fear, but at the same time we can turn to GOD who is our weapon against fear. GOD loves me, GOD loves you, GOD loves every man woman and child on this earth and GOD with and through his son Jesus has told us that love is the greatest weapon we have in our arsenal. I pray for you today that as you battle fear may you not do what fear tells you to do.  I pray that you listen to your fears, that you have respect for your fears, and that even at times you may be convinced by your fears, but most of all I pray that you feel the love of GOD, the hand of your creator, who with each breath you take says…I LOVE YOU…I LOVE YOU…I LOVE YOU.

Precious Father, Loving God, Holy Spirit I pray for every man, woman, and child on this earth as we experience the fears of the world, hate, anger, resentment, prejudice, job loss, violence, loss, illness… Our hearts, our minds, our souls, cry out to you, for your presence, your touch, your peace which passes all understanding in our lives,  AMEN!
