Farewell Blessing

Blessed are you!

Tomorrow the church will celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. The story is told to us in the first chapter of the book of Acts.

Jesus said , “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by God's own authority.” (Acts 1:7) Reading this verse reminds us that we don’t know everything, and be wary of those who think they do. Christ is saying in reality that perhaps not even Jesus knows everything. Some things reside only with the Heavenly Parent. If you are hearing theology that has all the answers for everything all the time, it might be a good idea to question such teaching.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight.“ (Acts 1:8,9) Jesus is saying that the geographic strategy of God includes the local, regional, those we don’t like, and the global. Then as Jesus departed, he went up into a “cloud.”

In many images of Jesus' Ascension, Christ is seen offering a blessing. Many artists have Jesus holding up three fingers in the Ascension blessing , which represent the Heavenly Parent, Christ, and the Holy Spirit.  In these verses from Acts chapter one, Jesus is indeed offering a farewell blessing to his followers.

Elevation has a new song that reminds us of ”Christ's blessing that is upon us, God’s presence is around us, and beside us. God is for you!”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp6aygmvzM4

When the news of the day causes such promises to seep from our heart, it is critical that we know the sacred places where we might be reminded.

For further reflection see : Psalm 68:32-35. John 17:1-11, and 1 Peter 5:6-11

Prayer: That we might be blessed in this moment.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
