Faithful Waste

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On the 4th of July, I turned 52. On this side of 50, I have noticed that the wrinkles, mingled with the gray, give off the appearance of wisdom. Younger pastors occasionally approach me now for advice with the assumption that my age has credentialed me.

One of the things younger clergy struggle with sometimes is the criticism that we pastors waste too much time. The question can pop up…“what happened from Sunday to Sunday.” Clergy I have known over the years have had a reputation for being disorganized, late to meetings, procrastinators, etc. Why is it, when we only have a few hundred people in our flock, our congregation, to care for, that we get so far behind, never seem to have enough hours in the day?

In defense of us pastors (and church professional) types, I must say that we often have a tough time deciding just when it is that we are wasting time. Last week on the youth mission trip to Chicago, I spent two hours talking to a troubled youth who was not even a participant in our congregation. Was this wasted time or the essence of my job?

When I prayed yesterday for 20 minutes or so, lifting up members of our congregation, and the people of Five Points, Haiti, Nicaragua in prayer, I wasn’t doing anything. I was praying. I was praying, meditating. Is that wasted time or the whole purpose of following Jesus and doing ministry? I think it is the core of who we are as Jesus’ disciples, whether we are clergy or not. May you soon find some time to waste on the kingdom of God! We have all become way too addicted to “high efficiency” and its overrated.

I really like Matthew 13 and the casting of seeds. It seems to me that casting seeds could appear to be a waste of time. So much depends on God to bring forth the fruit. Yet, is that not what Jesus is after in all of us, a faith that is willing to “faithfully waste," that there might be grace?

God’s peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
