Faithful Esther

Dear Whistleblowers,

The story of queen Esther’s intervention on behalf of her people is the story of Jewish survival in the face of pagan violence. It is also a story about one who is a model for those who are called to be faithful in unspectacular ways, though utterly essential ways today.

“Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for such a time as this."Esther 4:14

Lord, help us to be faithful to you in our time and place. We ask, not that we be enabled to be heroic, spectacular saints, but that we be those who are able to be quietly courageous when you call us to witness to you and your kingdom. In worship, give us the gifts we need to resist the temptation of the world, to stand fast, to speak up, to reach out in your name. To each of us there comes that time to be faithful, when the battle is won or lost through us. Help us to be faithful. Amen.

I suggest giving the book of Esther a quick read this week. Her book had many opponents who felt it should not be in the Bible. Opponents of Esther’s presence in the Bible felt there was too much mention of sex and no mention of God. Esther has made it into the Bible, this much we now know. But you might want to give her a read this week and determine for yourself how substantive the book is “…for such a time as this.”

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
