Faith is complicated

There’s a lot of suffering going on in the world today. The headlines of my daily newspaper (I know, I’m old school) declare new horrors almost daily. Human beings doing wrong – evil, to other human beings; all who are created in the image of God.

How do suffering and faith get along? Sarah Bessey writes in her latest book, "Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith:"

“Faith becomes more complicated when we allow our hearts to break. When we become present with and for the suffering of the world, when we begin to pay attention to our own stories and the stories of those alongside us - when we do this, our expectations change and our relationship with signs and wonders changes. But our hope only grows deeper roots, our longing for the Kingdom of God stretches out to the sun, and the Spirit's wind and water and fire seem like manna.

Barbara Kingsolver wrote in her book "Animal Dreams," "The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof."

That sounds a lot like Hebrews 11 - the original definition of faith. So right now, I think faith is figuring out what I hope for - redemption, wholeness, shalom, justice, love, life, one small baby to live and not die, all of it - and then fearlessly living under that roof. I will always pray as if this one thing is true: God is for us. And it's worthwhile to keep knocking. That's all I know about faith for sure.”

We may never have answers to our questions of “why bad things happen”. But we pray for faith to trust that God is for us. And that’s something that I’ve found happens when I’m with others. I can’t get there alone – but you can help carry me there. And I will help carry you there. That’s why we gather to worship, to hug, to listen and to pray on Sunday mornings at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m.

We’ll be looking for you.

Grace be with you,

Vikki

First of all I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question in which
I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to know how you
center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I have had trouble clearing my mind in getting my ideas
out there. I do take pleasure in writing however it just
seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions
or tips? Cheers!

browser compatibility issues. Whenever I take a look at your web site
in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in I.E., it's got some overlapping issues.
I merely wanted to provide you with a quick heads
