Experience Compassion

 Matthew 14:13-36

“When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed the sick.” Matthew 14:14.

How many miracles are in that sentence? I have always read this and automatically went to the miracle of healing, but today I am looking at the miracle of compassion. I don’t know about you, but I am finding it hard to find compassion in the world… and truthfully I am starting to realize there are times I am finding it hard to find compassion in myself.

Compassion as defined by The American Heritage Dictionary is a “Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it.”

The disciples had a long day. They had been helping with crowd control and by the end of the day they were tired and were thinking it would be nice to let everyone go find a place to stay and then sit down, get some dinner, and maybe watch some TV. Maybe they didn’t have TV they just wanted to relax and chat with those they were comfortable with. But Jesus had compassion for the people and I believe Jesus had compassion for his disciples. Jesus also had a long day, but serving and healing the sick isn’t work it’s healing and serving the sick. I find it hard to be compassionate when I feel I am doing too much for others and not enough for myself. The other thing I find interesting is the more I pray, the less I feel I am doing too much for others and not enough for myself. I believe compassion isn’t a duty, but a state of mind and the more I pray, the more compassionate I become and the more compassionate I become the more fulfilling my life is.

Precious Father, Loving God, Holy Spirit I pray for every man, woman, and child on this earth to experience your love through the compassion of those who call you Creator, Lord, and Savior AMEN!
