Evil Desire

2 Peter 1:1-21

2 Peter 1:3-11 “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure, For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Have you ever thought that the world was corrupt? Have you postulated to your friends or family that the world is corrupt due to the evil desires of the world? Are avarice, greed, power, and sex among some of the things you say are the evil desires of the world? Have you ever left something out because you didn’t think it was as bad as some other types of desire? Was it because… in some ways… it is what you desire?

Peter (Simon Peter), the one who let the rooster crow three times, says God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him. If you are feeling weak, or maybe you are coming to realize there is a desire in your life that is not truly fulfilling, that is actually blinding you from living a wonderful, glorious, effective, productive life. Then understand RIGHT NOW! You are cleansed from your past sins NOW! You get to start anew NOW! All it takes is a bit of faith, but don’t be scared or nervous or worried, because it doesn’t even take a faith the size of a mustard seed. You don’t have to have a faith the size of this period”.” All you need to know is that you have been cleansed from your past sins, they are forgotten, gone, zip. The next step is to follow what Simon Peter says:

1) To a very little bit of faith add just a bit of goodness. Maybe you can smile at yourself in a mirror, or even a friend or family member, or even hug someone, or go way out on a limb and break out into a full laugh.
2) And to that bit of goodness add just a bit of knowledge. Maybe you can go to church, or read from the bible, or write a devotional, or even talk with a knowledgeable friend.
3) And to that bit of knowledge add just a bit of self-control. Maybe you can hold back on a desire you are unsure of, if not all the way maybe just the smallest bit.
4) And to that bit of self-control add just a bit of perseverance. Know that you are cleansed from your past sins, can you hold off for just a little bit, can you forgo just a bit of your desire. Maybe go for a walk, talk with a different friend, close your eyes and say a prayer?
5) And to that bit of perseverance add just a bit of godliness. Forgive yourself at least a little bit.
6) And to that bit of godliness add just a bit of brotherly kindness. Maybe you can forgive someone who has hurt you or at least start to forgive them a little bit.
7) And to that bit of brotherly kindness add love. And with love and in love you will have everything you need in life. AMEN!

Precious Father, Loving God, Holy Spirit help us to know you have given us everything we need for life. Help us to see inside ourselves the desires that keep us from truly living the life you have for us. AMEN!
