Ending or Beginning?

What’s the conclusion of a story?

  • In fairy tales we have the long- suffering couple getting married and riding off into the sunset. But is that an ending or a beginning?
  • In a mystery novel, we figure out who done it. It’s the end of the book, but does it open up new possibilities?
  • Graduation is the final chapter of a school career, but it’s called commencement – a beginning.

The stories of our lives begin and end, but always lead to the next story. But when we can only see an ending and nothing more, that’s when we’ve lost our hope for the future. It’s a dark time in our hearts where we need some light to shine on a beginning.

The church season of Easter is winding down. Tomorrow is the 40th day of Easter, an important day: Ascension Day. The day we celebrate and remember the ascent of Jesus into heaven. Jesus takes his place at the right hand of God. Instead of seeing this as an ending, Jesus helped his friends to see it as a beginning. Now they know what God is like (God is like Jesus) and that God keeps promises. Jesus blesses them and tells them they will be equipped with power from on high. (Luke 24:45-53)

We are part of this story. Resurrection, heaven, glory…it’s all now. The story of the Kingdom of heaven is still being written. Each day we get to write our story anew because of Jesus. We are equipped with power from on high.

Thanks be to God!
