End Times

Dear Citizens of the Eschaton (end times),

“Christianity that is not thoroughly eschatological is not the faith of Jesus,” so said the great theologian Karl Barth. Eschatology, that is the talk about the end, the last things, permeates the faith of Jesus. This was the verdict of Albert Schweitzer in his famous study, “The Quest for the Historical Jesus” (Fortress Press , 2001). He showed that Jesus is an eschatological prophet who expected that the world was moving toward its end.

There have been some biblical commentators like Marcus Borg and others from the Jesus Seminar who have tried to render Jesus into a wandering sage, a teacher of wisdom, the leader of a social movement.

I expect that their efforts to come up with a non-eschatological Jesus are doomed to failure. There are just too many texts, such as the text for this coming Sunday, Luke 20: 27-38, that definitely depict Jesus as a visionary prophet of the last things, one who casts a whole new world.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
