Dust

When I was a kid, I once tried to convince my mom that we didn’t need to dust/do chores every week. She looked at me. I went on to say something to the affect that if you don’t move anything it’s not as noticeable AND that God wanted there to be dust – because it just comes back like it’s supposed to be there. We continued to dust every week and I did not go on to be a trial lawyer, but I did give it my best try to minimize my time doing chores.

Last week was Ash Wednesday and the start to Lenten Season. During the service and time of reflection, individuals were invited to receive the imposition of ashes. As the ashes were received, we heard the words “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return”. (There’s that dust thing again …??).

Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent is a time for reflection. For me, a little extra reflection takes place. Back in the day, I was born on Ash Wednesday. To this day, Ash Wednesday and my birthday have never fallen on the same day. It doesn’t look like it will any time soon either. Out of dust, I was born and given life.

There are many reasons to dust and there are many reasons the dust returns. This week, for me, it has resonated in a way that reminds me that when life gets a little messy or “dusty”, it is God coming to remind us, you and I, where we came from and who we belong to. We are children of God. The dust is His gentle reminder that he came into this world to save us from our sins and give us life.

Sunday in church, we sang the perfect song, Beautiful Things (Gungor). This song is a great reminder that when we are feeling the stresses of life or less than, that God makes all things beautiful … out of dust.

Dear God, thank you for dust and the beautiful things it represents. May we remember that we are from dust and to dust we shall return. Please help us to remember that beautiful things come out of dust not just for ourselves, but for others around us. May we help grow and cultivate a world that is pleasing to you. In your name we pray. Amen.

All this pain
I wonder if I'll ever find my way
I wonder if my life could really change, at all
All this earth
Could all that is lost ever be found?
Could a garden come out from this ground, at all?

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

All around,
Hope is springing up from this old ground
Out of chaos life is being found, in you

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us
Oh, you make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make me new,
You are making me new
You make me new,
You are making me new
(Making me new)

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us
Oh, you make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make me new,
You are making me new
You make me new,
You are making me new
