Dogs and God

Did you hear about the agnostic, dyslexic? He sat around wondering if there was a dog. :)

Just recently it has occurred to me that many of the traits dogs possess are reminders of God. Think about it:

· Dogs love unconditionally; God loves unconditionally

“The Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” Jeremiah 31:3-4

· Dogs always forgive our transgressions; God forgives our transgressions.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,” Ephesians 2:8

· Dogs are willing to do what we ask of them; God is willing to do what we ask of Him

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” 1 John 5:14

· Dogs accept us, no matter who we are; God accepts anyone who seeks Him

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

· Dogs protect us; God protects us

“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” Exodus 14:14

Perhaps the best gift of all dogs give us, is the opportunity to be vulnerable. Have you ever noticed how you feel when engaging with a dog? Since they love unconditionally, the tendency is to lay aside our worries and apprehensions and just open our heart to receive the love being offered. There is great peace in that feeling. Isn’t that what God offers and asks of us? “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11: 28-29

Dogs can do some amazing things; provide companionship, lead the blind, find people, etc. They can also serve as a great reminder of how to love and be loved.

Lord, just for today, let me be the person my dog thinks I am.
