Deeper with Fewer

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Have you ever had someone say something, and you knew that the words spoken were not of human     origin?  You received the words with such amazement and profound clarity that you knew the words were beyond human inspiration, the content of the thoughts had to be from God.  It was like you had been searching for some guidance, and Jesus brought it through a vessel you least expected?

Last spring I was sitting at a continuing education event at Confluence Ministries.  It was a panel discussion on the topic of, "the potential use of entertainment and celebrity in sharing the gospel.”  One of the presenters was Brad Corrigan of the musical group Dispatch.  Brad said he had been told by God that Jesus wanted him to "Go deeper with fewer people.”  He talked about how playing to sold out crowds at Madison Square Garden was pretty cool, but it left him empty somehow.  When Dispatch formally broke up in 2002, he journeyed the world looking for a place where he could follow Jesus by going "deeper with fewer."

God called Brad Corrigan to a garbage dump outside of Managua, Nicaragua.  To say it more accurately the organization he founded,  LOVE LIGHT AND MELODY (LLM) has accepted God's call to minister to the 220 families who live on the dump.  They have directly chosen to offer medical care, safety, and other services to perhaps a half dozen families who resided on the dump.  Brad and LLM are being true to the vision to go “deeper with fewer.”

“He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor.  For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world.  He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cutoff in darkness; for not by might does one prevail.” I Samuel 2:8-9

“Deeper with fewer.”  Those words allowed me to relax and let God.  It is not the world that we are called to save.  Jesus already came to save the world (John 3:16.)  God calls us into missional community to participate with God by touching a few in a deep way as God has first touched us.  When God goes deeper with fewer the ironic thing is masses come into the presence of God as generations now and to come, are called into the kingdom.  It is God's plan for loving, saving and serving the world.

Let us pray for Brad that God might use him to go “deeper” with the “few"(when you consider the population of the earth) in the pursuit of Jesus' mission among us this Sunday at GGCC.  Each of us who are able to hear Brad's message this Sunday will indeed be blessed.

Still in one peace,

David J. Jensen

Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals by Shane Claiborne, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, and Enuma Okoro.
I have been excited for this book to be available for quite some time. It is more than a simple devotional book. What these authors have assembled is a tool that can take you through a worship service each day of the year. The words and spirit of the saints are found throughout the work. It is a daily tool I have been yearning for. If you are looking for daily comfort that comes from a one on one relationship with God, this is not the book for you. The intent of this book is transformation both within yourself and in the world. ~ Pastor David J. Jensen
