2 John 1:1-13

2 John 1:4-6 "It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love."

OK, I got it... walk in love. Easy, right?

Avicii, has a song "Wake me up" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcrbM1l_BoI)

It starts out with the verse "Feeling my way in the darkness, guided by my beating heart." This doesn't sound like walking in love, if we are "feeling our way in the darkness, guided by our beating hearts." But truth be told, I have spent time feeling my way in the darkness and thinking the only thing I can hear is my beating heart. That is life at times. It is at times like this that I need to understand, I need to know that GOD loves me... but how?

Avicii goes on to say in their song "Wake me up", "All this time I was finding myself and I didn't know I was lost." John is talking to a family... a community, that is struggling with people around them, maybe some in the family, but certainly some in their community who are challenging the ideas in the community of what it is to be a follower of Jesus. We could talk about the technical issues that are being raised, but that isn't the issue. The issue is that there are those around us that are sometimes... feeling their way in the darkness... and there are times that we find ourselves... feeling our way in the darkness.

The request that Avicii makes is to "Wake me up when I'm wiser and I'm older." John tells the woman he is writing to tell her that she should avoid these people even to the point of not letting them into her home or welcoming them. But he starts out by saying we must love one another, we must walk in love.

It is not easy. Let me repeat the obvious... IT IS NOT EASY. To walk... feeling my way through the darkness, guided by my beating heart and it is not easy to walk in love. So what are we to do... we just can't pretend we're asleep and that we'll wake up when we're wiser and we're older, and for me it isn't loving and doesn't make sense to ignore or not welcome people, whether they are a stranger on the street or a member of my family.

The important thing to me is that I know... that you know, that you are where you belong, you are with GOD. Wherever you are... in the darkness or in the light you are with GOD, because GOD is with you.

There is nothing you can do to make GOD love you any less. There is nothing you can do to make GOD love you any less. Nothing, nada, zip, zilch.

I have a saying on my refrigerator that states "You laugh because I am different, I laugh because you're all the same." I bought this, I thought, to remind me of what it is like to swim against the stream, to be a follower of Jesus, in a world that does not appear to me at times to be following Jesus. 2 John says to walk in love, but to not welcome those who don't believe, those who are feeling their way in the darkness, guided by their fear...their beating heart. All this time I have been looking for Jesus, finding myself, but now I realize I am not lost... I am where I belong, because GOD is with me. You are where you belong because GOD is with you. There is nothing you can do to make GOD love you any less.

You laugh because I am different I laugh because I love GOD and I know that God is in each of us, around each of us, through each of us, I laugh because I love you!

May you find this day, this week, this second, the ability to laugh, to walk in love even though you or someone you love may be feeling their way through the darkness and may you know there is nothing you can do to make GOD love you any less, because you are with GOD because GOD is with you!

Precious Father, Loving GOD, Holy Spirit, I pray! AMEN!
