We are God’s Grace Community Church.

I think we know the “God’s Grace” is unconditional love. I think we know that the “Church” is where we gather, an identity of sorts, something that brings us together.

But what is the “Community”? Here are a few thoughts.

A community is not simply a group of people who live together and love each other. It is a place of resurrection. – Jean Vanier

Community is first and foremost a gift of the Holy Spirit, not built upon mutual compatibility, shared affection, or common interests but upon having received the same divine breath, having been given a heart set aflame by the same divine fire, and having been embraced by the same divine love. - Henri Nouwen

Community is the place where God meets us. – John Ortberg

Community is what you were created for. It’s God’s desire for your life. It is the one indispensable condition for human flourishing. - John Ortberg

It is in community that we come to see God in the other. It is in community that we see our own emptiness filled up. It is community that calls me beyond the pinched horizons of my own life, my own country, my own race, and gives me the gifts I do not have within me. - Joan Chittister

The only answer in this life, to the loneliness we are all bound to feel, is community. The living together, working together, sharing together, loving God and loving our [neighbor], and living close to [God] in community so we can show our love for [God]. - Dorothy Day

I think the “Community” is not that we are just in the neighborhood where we are planted, but it is what and who we are. It’s community combined with God’s unconditional love that is everything we need.

Tomorrow, after worship, we attend to business. The business of being God’s Grace Community Church. We will look back at 2017 and see where God showed up and showed off. We will hear the “State of the Church” from Pastor DJ. The 2018 budget will be presented and approved. And, we will affirm and renew once again our participation in and commitment to the mission and vision that God is calling us to. It’s known at the Annual Gathering and we hope to see you there.

Grace be with you,
