Comfort Zone

Sitting in church on Sunday as I listened to Pastor Dave reflect on the words of Jeremiah 1:4-10 and how we are to “Answer the Call”, I thought about an image I saw posted on Facebook. Perhaps you have seen it??

I often times find myself living in my own “safe” and “comfortable space”. At least, I think that’s what it is. It’s a good thing, right?? Maybe not?? Further reflection tells me it isn’t always so. What I think is the “safe bubble” I’ve created for myself may not be exactly what God has planned. It can be a scary thing to step outside our comfort zone, especially when we think that we may be doing so alone. Isaiah 43:1 says “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” God calls us by name and walks the journey with us. We are not alone as HE is by our side along with the people HE has placed in our lives.

I believe that God pulls us out of our comfort zones in only a way that HE knows how. He speaks to us when we least expect it. Monday as I was sitting at work, feeling like I was being pulled in more than one direction, I heard these words, “Where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD.” I was reminded of one of my favorite Psalms.

Psalm 121 (NIV)

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore

As you are being pulled in the various directions of life, perhaps even out of your comfort zone, know that you are called by name and that you are not alone. May you be reminded by the words of the Psalm that God is going to protect you and walk with you into the magical places where God shows up and shows off. HE is with you as you answer the call.

Dear God, Thank you for walking with us as we journey through life. We thank you for guiding us outside of our comfort zones; into the places full of your awe and wonder. May we continue to seek life and adventure, setting fear aside as we answer your call in the beautiful world you created for us. In your name we pray. Amen.
