Carrying the Mat

Dear Mat Carriers,

In Mark 2:1-12 Jesus is in a house that is surrounded by new found fans. People are pressing in on Jesus, all of them in need of something from him. Four people arrive with a buddy on a mat who needs to be healed. Seeing no way to get at Jesus in a conventional way, they climb up on the roof and lower the wounded friend on the mat down through the roof. Jesus affirms the four friends' creativity and forgives the man on the mats sins, and heals him.

In the box office smash “The Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring,“ there’s a small scene that speaks to the issue of leadership. An elvan queen, Galadriel, passes a test by overcoming the temptation to take a powerful ring from the hobbit Frodo. With the mounting scrutiny and pressure, Frodo expresses to the queen how alone he feels in his role. She tells him, “You are a ring bearer, Frodo--- to bear a ring of power is to be alone.” In a moment of vulnerability, the reluctant leader Frodo fearfully confesses that he doesn’t like the pressure. Galadriel replies, “But this task was appointed to you….for even the smallest person can change the course of the future.”

Whose mat are you being called to carry? Who are some of the people who have walked beside you and carried you when you were on a mat. We have passed out cards at Gods Grace Community Church over the past couple of weeks with four blanks on them. Each blank is the opportunity for you to write down a name whom you want to pray for and perhaps find a way to enter into the wound that puts them on the mat, and then invite them into the presence of the Jesus who is right in front of them. Jesus forgives our sins and calls us off the mat. To make a list such as this and pray for another, might just be a small way you change the course of another’s future. We have several great opportunities coming up at GGCC to invite a friend:
