Can't Be Counted

For the Son of Man came to find and restore the lost.” Luke 19:10 The Msg

Last night Terry & I attended a “roast” and 60th birthday party for Rev Kelly.  It was a fun event with lots of laughter, memories and affirmations for Rev from people who have known him for many years.  There were childhood friends, leaders in the community and others who have worked with Rev in his mission to keep young people out of gangs.

“The Rev” serves tirelessly with young people and their families.  He also believes in transformation of those who were “lost” by helping them to turn around and restore their lives.  One of the things that Rev Kelly is known for is being there for families on the loss of a loved one due to gang violence.

One of the challenges of working in a non-profit is showing the effectiveness of the program.  It’s a numbers game to show that you’re doing what you say you’re going to do.  Open Door’s mission is “To reduce street gang recruitment activities and the causes of gang violence by providing positive alternative activities and family support to at-risk youth.”  One of the speakers last night noted that it’s easy to count the lives lost due to gang violence.  It’s easy to count the numbers of students in Rev’s afterschool program.

But the number we’ll never know is the number of lives saved, the number of incidents that don’t happen, the number of fights that don’t occur, or the number of good decisions made.  One cannot simply count the impact that the Rev has made in lives changed and the lost restored.  We have to trust God that because of the work Rev. Leon Kelly does in Jesus’ name the Kingdom of God is near.

Thanks be to God!

Join us tomorrow at 9 or 10:30 to hear the stories from the mission trip to Milwaukee -- the stories of restoration that maybe can’t be counted but surely have made an impact on more lives than we’ll ever know.

God bless you,
