"Break this day free"

Some days.

Some days are too tied down to the past.

What if’s, if only’s, “failures calling after me,”

My own and those of others.

This has been one of those weeks when the reach of the past has been all too powerful. We all have them. They clamor at us, “we made you who you are,” mean accusations that seem to limit our future. Or at least the present.

We are stuck.

Tell me it hasn’t happened to you. I’d believe you. But I doubt you will say that. We all have our days.

On such days, in such weeks,
When it is too cold and the Broncos lost and the poor Wise Men are still out there wandering in the desert – it is still Epiphany, you know, and they had to take the long way around, home – and we are stuck in deserts and cold and loss

There is a still small Voice that causes those unbearable voices to grow small and we see

“underneath the surf

The wide un-

Knowable ocean
All before me.”

God has plans. Before, later, now, after, in the face of disaster, trauma, and the

Deserts, cold and loss,

There is the Voice that spreads out before us the gift of new life.

Seize it. Nurture it in others. Listen for it, closely, it can be quiet.

And live. “                                                     (with thanks to poet, friend, John Brehm for the quotes)
