Bread

Dear Mysteries,

I have been married to Amy Faith Jensen now for 32 years. I have therefore, had the opportunity to listen to her, to be with her, to know her as well as anyone in the world.

Yet despite all that, even after all those years, she is still able to surprise me. She is still a mystery to me in so many ways for she is not an extension of me, or merged with me. She is there, in her difference and individuality, there sometimes against me in order that she is really with me.

The human mind will never have the language to fully capture the essence of God. However, the relationship with a spouse is somewhat analogous to our relationship with God. In the parable in John 6:24-35 about the “bread,” the followers of Jesus ask for proof that he the Son of God. Jesus' disciples request, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you preforming?” Jesus then refers to himself as “bread.” Jesus says, "…My Father gives you true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Every follower of Jesus knows something of this heavenly bread that contains the Christ, and yet we each grow anew to the mysterious power of the bread each time we dine upon it.

Who would have guessed God would be revealed in bread? The one true God is intended to be tasted, smelled, felt, and dined upon that we might have life in all its fullest. Even after all these years, God still surprises!

Read all of John 6 for further reflection.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J Jensen
