Brave Prayers

We kicked off our Lent sermon series Living with Jesus from the Henri Nouwen book, Here and Now - Living in the Spirit with an installment on prayer: How to Talk with Jesus.  Looking forward to learning more in the coming weeks from Nouwen.

Decorating our inner room with the intentional repetition of beloved prayers (Lord's Prayer, 23rd Psalm, Prayer of St Francis, etc) and contemplating the life, ministry and teaching of Jesus by reading the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) are ways that Nouwen teaches us to leave our worries behind and keep our focus on God.

May we be bold and brave with our prayers as we sang using Sara Bareilles' Brave for the sermon song.

Reflections, discussions and activities for your week:

  • How does the activity of prayer get in the way of prayer? (see Matt 6:1-2,5)
  • Where does the Lord’s Prayer fit in your prayer life? Or, does it? (see Matt 6:7-13)
  • Does worrying get in the way of your prayer? What else gets in the way of your prayer? Henri Nouwen says that when we focus on things “above” (God) there is not room left for worry. How might you focus your prayer on God, scripture and memorized prayers?
  • Is it hard to live a life of prayer in a world where few pray or speak lovingly about prayer? How might you create a supportive soil (books, music, people) for your faith to grow?
