Born From Above

Dear Control Freaks,

I confess that too many of my sermons have as their unstated subtext: here is what you need to do (or here is how you need to think ) in order to get yourself right with God. But what if we are unable to get ourselves right with God? What if there is no way for us to right our relationship with God by what we do, think, or believe, but that it is up to God?

“To be with God is really to be involved with some enormous, overwhelming desire, and joy, and power which you cannot control, which controls you. God is a means of liberation and not a means to control others.” James Baldwin, “Nobody Knows My Name.”

When Nicodemus comes to Jesus to talk about matters of the spiritual life, Jesus responds by telling him that a relationship with God is  “…born from above… ( John 3:3).” Jesus goes on to say, ”Unless a person submits to his original creation-the wind hovering over the water creation, the invisible moving the visible, a baptism into new life- it’s not possible to enter God’s kingdom (John 3:5). “

For further reflection read John 3:1-17.

Prayer: That we might submit to the mystery of the Holy Spirit.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
