Beyond Serene

Dear People of the Fringe,

Read Luke 8:26-39. Jesus is out beyond the boundaries, out in Gentile territory. There he meets a tormented man who has been shoved out on the fringe.

The story is thus a challenge to our presence in the quiet, serene stability that is our worship space as a missional community at Rock Canyon High School, or where ever we find peace and security. For one thing, it is a very strange story that has caused consternation and comment from the very first---the crazy, raving man, shouting, naked, bound in chains; the presence of pigs, the screaming of demons, the death of pigs. It is a strange story.

It is a story about Jesus, about Jesus entering into the strange and uncontrollable, about Jesus exercising healing and creative power in a chaotic situation. Thus the story beckons us out beyond our serene stability, out to where people scream out in pain and demons of the body and mind do their demonic worst, and strange, inexplicable, uncontainable things happen.

And that’s where Jesus is.... That is where we are called to go today, if we are to be with Jesus.                       Read Luke 8:26-39.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
