Habakkuk 3:1-19

Habakkuk 3:18-19, “yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in GOD my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength, he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.”

Habakkuk lived in troubling times. GOD seemed far away, evil was everywhere. To Habakkuk it appeared that GOD tolerated wrong, strife, conflict, and that justice had been perverted.

Luckily, that isn’t like it is today… right? We aren’t under threat of attack are we? There are no false prophets who are puffed up trying to lead us astray… right? There isn’t a problem with greed or plundering the poor, or people with unjust gain, or alcohol, or drugs… as Habakkuk talks about in chapters 1 & 2… is there?

Let’s face it, there has always been evil as far as we can remember or experience. BUT even more wonderful, more powerful, more reassuring is that there has always been GOD. Rob Bell tells us, Henri Nouwen tells us, lots of people tell us we are the beloved of GOD.

GOD has chosen you, you are a special person
GOD has blessed you, you are blessed now and GOD has more blessings to pour out onto you.
And yet each of us suffer in a way no one else suffers in this world. (Henri Nouwen)

Habakkuk saw and experienced evil just about 2600 years ago just like we do today and he chose to “rejoice in the Lord” to be “joyful in GOD my savior.”

Henri Nouwen says we can do the same. Nouwen says “I believe deeply that all the good things our world has to offer are yours to enjoy”, “The world is evil only when you become its slave.”

Precious Father, Loving God, Holy Spirit help me this day to go forward and not only believe I am the Beloved of GOD, but to live knowing I am the beloved of GOD. AMEN!
