Beautiful

One of my saints is my aunt Vikki. Yep, I’m named after her. She died in May 2013. It was cancer. It wasn’t fair. But her impact on those of us left behind was huge.

I got to speak at her funeral. Here’s a portion of what I said.

Vikki knew that you should surround yourself with people you love and the things you like, no – things you love. Things and people that make you feel good. She painted, she wrote, she turned trash into treasure. Life might not always be good, but you can make things beautiful with love and humor; hard work and patience. With simplicity and a light hand.

There’s a song by a band called Gungor, out of Denver, called Beautiful Things. Some of the lyrics go like this:

All this pain I wonder if I'll ever find my way?
I wonder if my life could really change at all?
All this earth
Could all that is lost ever be found?
Could a garden come up from this ground at all?

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

The song’s about God. But God most often comes to us through the people in our lives. That song is about Vikki, too. She made beautiful things out of trash, she made beautiful things out of us. Her gardens were a thing of wonder.

I am who I am in large part because of who she was. That’s what our saints do for us – they make us who we are. Thank you God for Vikki and for the saints you give us to help us be all you dream we are.

Tomorrow at 9 and 10:30 am we’ll be celebrating All Saints Sunday, a day to remember and honor those who have gone before us and who join God in making beautiful things. We’ll be looking for you. AND – it’s the 4th annual Fall Fair where non-profits and small profits sell their goods and give a portion to our Ready to Bless Fund, the financial resources we share with our ministry partners and to join God in Jesus’ mercy to change the world. It's going to be a special morning.

Grace and peace,
Vikki
