Be Kind

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." It seems like this quote throws itself in front of me every so often. I get so caught up in my own "junk"... so much so that I find myself worrying a lot more about myself than the needs of others. Every one of us has our own baggage and junk. It's easy to forget that. God calls us to care for one another... to care about our neighbor's battle just as much as our own.
Have you ever thought about how often we say to someone "how are you?" And we expect them to reply with a simple "good." It's a social courtesy. We ask people how they're doing. Many times we don't really want to know. We're busy people. We've got a lot on our plates. What if we asked someone how they're doing and then really focused in on their answer. If they just replied with a "good" we could ask a follow up question. We could invest more. We could figure out what their battle is and show them some compassion.
It's hard though isn't it? It's difficult to be mindful of "taking time to be kind." But, maybe if we just started by taking time to really care for people just a little more each day it could make a rather substantial difference. Maybe we would be surprised by our ability to be kind.
"Be kind and compassionate to one another..." Ephesians 4:32
