Banana Bread

I recently heard that the most googled recipe during the past month of quarantine has been for banana bread. The subject matter of the piece was "what brings people comfort" during these unsettling times. What brings you comfort? I'm not sure if it actually brings me comfort, or the fact that I've spent more time reflecting back on childhood memories. I've thought about the prayer that we always said at bedtime: "Jesus lay your hand on me, bless and remember me, amen." And then there was the prayer that my grandpa used to start every holiday meal: "Come our Jesus, be our guest. And let thy gifts to us be blessed." Finally, whenever I visited the home of a Catholic friend, they prayed "Bless us oh Lord for these thy gifts which we are about to receive from the bounty of Christ our Lord, amen." (I was always amazed at how quickly the words were said, with almost no separation! I expected some mom to say "again please, slower this time," but that never happened! )

What brings you comfort during these unsettling times? At the top of my list is the assurance that God walks beside us, he's on the journey with us. And just after that is the certainty of my church family's steadfast presence, albeit by our Zoom connection. Also on my list...having that extra loaf of banana bread in the freezer for emergencies.

Be well friends,

Andrea Heshmati
