How do we listen?

How do we listen to other’s stories?

How do we listen when we think we know everything there is to know about an issue?

How do we listen when we think we have changed?

How do we listen to our own experiences?

How do we listen when we’re tired of listening?

How do we listen to God?

God was calling Samuel. Only Samuel didn’t know that it was God calling. Samuel needed a trusted mentor to help him understand that the voice he was hearing was really God.

Sometimes we need others to help to us listen and hear what’s really going on. But that requires a willingness to be humble, to trust, to try, to create space and believe it’s possible.

These days I think listening is being required of us. Not listening to the endless news feeds. But listening to one another. Listening to the people we know and seeking to listen to the people we don’t know – yet. A posture of listening, humility and a willingness to unlearn what we’ve learned.

May we be like Samuel, willing to say, “Here I am Lord.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 or 10:30 or via the stream as we together we try to hone our listening skills: listening to one another and listening to God. Daisy from Love, Light and Melody will be with us – it promises to be a morning of joy and worship and gratitude. It won’t be the same without you.
