"WE GIVE THANKS""I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord,
"who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
Revelation 1:8 We give thanks to You, O Lord, Almighty God. In one week we will be celebrating Thanksgiving, a time of year for us to give thanks for all of the blessings in our lives. As our families and friends gather we should express our thanks to Jesus. It is easy to get tied up in the busy times of the holidays and to forget why we have been put on this earth. We should all take a moment in our days to step back and thank God for all of the things we have been blessed with in our lives. PRAYER:Dear God, I ask for you to help me to be thankful. Remind me that everything I have has been a gift from you and I am only its keeper. Help me to resist the selfishness that comes with being blessed in this world. In your son's name, Jesus, I pray.Deanne Cruickshank

God Appointments

Psalm 118:24

This is the day the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

I had a God appointment the other day. I stopped to buy milk on the way home from an outing with a friend. I was running late but kept getting this prompting to stop for milk. I decided while I was there to make my rounds through the whole store to pick up some groceries for the week ahead.

As I was looking at chicken an elderly gentleman beside me picked up a package of chicken breasts and asked, "How do you cook these?" "Well, there are several good ways to cook chicken breasts..." I started to answer. "You see, my wife has terminal cancer and I'm "it" in the kitchen these days and I don't know what I'm doing."

My heart sank for this man's heavy burden. I proceeded to give him some ideas and then patted his back and said, "I am so sorry that you are going through this. God Bless you."

He responded with genuine gladness, "My wife has already lived 3-4 weeks beyond what the doctors predicted so every day is a gift."

This is the day the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Amen!

Every day is a gift. I know that things are tough for everyone right now but, if this wise man who is about to lose the love of his life can have this perspective; surely the rest of us can too!

I went on to find the milk and on several other stops in the store ran into this fine gentleman and offered a few more ideas for his quick and easy recipes with chicken. He said, "Boy I am sure glad I ran into you today."

I knew in my heart I was the one that was glad to run into him that day. Keep those God appointments! They never fail to fill your soul!

Abba, thank-you for the gentle promptings you offer to keep your divine appointments. Thank you also for the gentle reminder that even in the face of such loss, every day is a gift, a blessing to be cherished. Amen

Tuesday, November 18 - DEVOTIONS - This Weeks

"Praise the LORD!"

That's it, all in one simple statement, "Praise the LORD". When I first read this I said rather sarcastically "Yeah Right!" I've got the house to clean, the dog needs a bath because his hair is starting to mat, I have pages and pages of forms to fill out for my daughters school, sales at work are so down I'm getting nervous about payroll, our computer printer is on the blitz and Psalm 135 says "Praise the LORD."

Sometimes my mind goes in two directions, how can I Praise the LORD and get everything done I need to do? Things weighing on my mind from last week and this coming week that need to be done.

What is it that causes me to dwell on what wasn't finished or what needs to be done? What keeps me from Praising the LORD?"

It's me! It's not my wife, not my children, not my pets, not work, not the stock market...

It's me, It's me, It's me O'LORD standing in the way of LOVE!

Psalm 135:15 says it so well. "The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men." My favorite passage in the old testament, the one that makes me think the most about myself and what and who I am follows along the lines of Psalm 135:15-18 but comes from Haggai 1:6 "You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it."

SO, TODAY! Let us praise the LORD with all our heart, all our mind, and all our soul!
Let us harvest much and Let us praise the LORD!
Let us eat enough and Let us praise the LORD!
Let us drink our fill and Let us praise the LORD!
Let us put on warm clothes and Let us praise the LORD!

Precious Father, Loving GOD, Holy Spirit, Let us Praise the LORD! AMEN!

"We are never more than one grateful thought away from peace of heart." -- Brother David Steindl-Rast. This is our Gratitude Reflection for the day, one of a month-long list of daily quotes, prayers or scripture readings available on our website. It leads us to think that our thoughts might have an impact on our attitudes and our gratefulness. I'd like to share a piece written by Joyce Rupp and found in the book, "The Circle of Life...The Heart's Journey Through the Seasons" by Joyce Rupp and Macrina Wiederkehr.

A Closer Look at Thanksgiving

If you look at a sunset, you might see only the disappearance of daylight.
If you look beneath, you may see darkness opening the splendor of stars.

If you look at illness and disease, you might see only physical diminishment.
If you look beneath, you may see it as a teacher bringing you vital wisdom.

If you look at a broken relationship, you might see only a harsh ending.
If you look beneath, you may see the courageous seeds of new growth.

If you look at lost dreams, you might see only disappointment and doubt.
If you look beneath, you may see the stuff that new dreams contain.

If you look at the death of a loved one, you might see only pervasive sorrow.
If you look beneath, you may see that love lives on forever in the heart.

If you look at the planet's pain and creatures' woe, you might see only despair.
If you look beneath, you may see hope woven in the compassionate care of many.

If you look at yourself, you might see only tarnished unfinishedness.
If you look beneath, you may see your basic goodness shining there.

If you look for the divine being, you might see mostly unresolved questions.
If you look beneath, you may be astounded at the availability of divine love.

Thanksgiving is a time to look beneath our external lives for the unwavering love, the ceaseless peace, and the enduring strength that lie in the deep waters of our soul. The more we trust the "unknowable depths" of our existence, the more the power of gratitude becomes a song we daily sing. With what do you struggle today? What might lie beneath that struggle for which you can give thanks? -- Joyce Rupp

May we look beneath the surface to find the gifts God has waiting for us and may we be renewed through that gratitude,
Vikki

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The text for Sunday is a hard one to figure in some ways. A master was going on a journey so he left everything for his three servants to manage. (Matthew 25:14-15) Two of the servants risked much and made good on their investment doubling the value of the original principle they had been given to invest.

The third servant came back very proud that he had risked nothing, and gained nothing. The master's response to this third servant was, "You are wicked and lazy!" (Matthew 25:26)

Why? Why would the master consider the third servant to be "wicked and lazy?" The servant had not lost anything? He returned all he had been given to watch over? In the economic climate of November 14, 2008 if you have a financial manager that reports in "you did not lose anything today," that is considered good news! However, our God expects more from us than just maintaining the status quo. Our God has as the story says given us "everything!" Jesus died on the cross that we might have it all! Now what do we intend to do with this news of lavish unconditional love and eternal truth? Do we risk sharing it with the world to see what happens? Or do we play it safe, and maintain everyday life as we know it?

The risk according to the story is to play it safe. The master is not real pleased with the "wicked ways" of those who perpetuate the status quo.

Some thoughts for you on risk taking.

"Shun security" Thales of Miletos, Greek Philopher and mathematician (640-?BC)
"During the first period of a person's life, the danger is not to risk." Soren Kierkegaard, Danish Philosopher (1813-1855)

"Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices." Katherine Mansfield, New Zealand-born British Author (1888-1923)

See you on Sunday!

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen

A Poem For My Daughter By: Charlie

"She's so sure
I'll always be here she's
willing to leave me a little
at a time, tentative raids
into the world, returning
as we walk, with branch, feather,
flower, bottletop or unnameable
rubber gasket, fragments of
the shared planet, holding them up
for comment, then throwing them
back...
She keeps bringing me things
as if I'm an alter. Each we sniff, turn,
taste, name. Each small part a portal
through which to see it all."

What a wonderful word picture written by a father to his daughter. Such trust, if we could only trust this way. God does offer us this kind of relationship, this type of daily journey with Him. He is always with us as we go out into the world. Many times during the day we can come back to God with all our challenges and joys asking him to help us name and understand them all.

Thank you Father, for always being with us. Guard our hearts and minds so we never close them to your presence. We are so thankful to be your children.

Amen

He's calling you out!

Will you be a leader God can use - Any way He wants?

Read Philippians 2:12-18

Ordinary people, extraordinary things!

Consider the world of sports. More games have been won through the efforts of ordinary coaches than all the famous coaches combined.
The same can be said in the efforts of ordinary people bringing others to Christ. Ordinary people not famous evangelists.

"Shine like a star in the universe." Take your game to a higher level and your "teammates" will do the same. Everyone achieves more!

How can you make this kind of impact - SELL OUT!

Put the Kingdom of God first in everything you do!

Be sensitive to what Christ wants, not what you think is best.

"Winning" is a by product of aiming for perfection in Jesus Christ.

Colossians 3:23-24
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Everything?

Philippians 4:6 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

Context is everything. Paul wrote the book of Philippians while sitting in a jail. Yet, this letter is one full of joy and encouragement.

As I ponder our economy and the uncertainty of revenue streams into our businesses and into our homes, I have no doubt what Paul would tell me if he were penning me from prison in today's vernacular.

"Hey, wake up sister! Why are you so worried about tomorrow when you haven't even lived today yet? Forget about it! Don't fret about the next deal. Don't worry about your health. Breathe in, breathe out."

Regardless of what's on your brain today, my friend, share it with God. Thankfully. Yes, with thanksgiving. Tell God what you are concerned about. Tell him everything. There is nothing too big for God. Come with a thankful heart. Let uncertainty fall away to a place you need not visit anymore.

Dear God,
I'm worried about my next doctor's appointment. I'm concerned about my son. I wonder what my business associates think of me. I don't know when or how this cloud of anxiety will dissipate. But I do know that you are in control of my life. I trust you, dear Father and ask you to still my discontent and hold my hand through this stormy day. I am thankful. I am alive. Amen.

Post Script (PS): Did I mention prison earlier? Ken completes his life sentence today. 30 years married to me... Happy Anniversary, my friend. Thanks be to God!

For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by God's word and by prayer.
1 Timothy 4:4-5

We believe that "God the Father created heaven and earth." God created everything and Paul tells us through his letter to Timothy that everything created by God is good.

Humans, though we have sinned and fallen short were created by God and therefore are good. But even though we are "good", we have still messed up a lot of stuff! The economy of our country is in a shambles and schools in Haiti and around the world are literally in a shambles. Citizens are watching to see what change will mean for them with a new president. Jobs are being lost and homes are in jeopardy. Too many children die each day from poverty, disease and violence.

It sure seems like a lot of the news printed in my paper each morning or reported on the many news channels all through the day is not good. How can we find any "good"?

As people who follow Jesus, we are expected to find the "good"! And not only to find it, but bring it to light!

"Scratch the surface of every good thing in the world, and you'll find love.
Generosity: Love of giving freely
Listening: Love of tuning in
Keeping promises: Love of following through
Forgiveness: Love of self
Peace: Love beyond self
Understanding: The love underneath it all
Curiosity: Love of knowledge
Justice: Love for fellow human beings" - Addie Johnson in Life Is Sweet

May we look for and find Love in every good thing God has created,
Vikki

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A man was fishing on a river bank, in an isolated spot, where he was certain no one would see him.

Suddenly, out of the bushes, a stranger appeared. "Have you had any luck?" the stranger asked politely. "Sure have," said the fisherman. "I caught 21 pickerel, 16 bass, and a half-dozen catfish."

"That's very interesting," the stranger replied. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jones, and I am the toughest fish-and game-warden in this state."

"Pleased to meet you," the fisherman replied. "My name is Smith, and I'm the biggest liar in this state."

In the text for this Sunday, Joshua 24;1-3, 14-25, we have a story of a people who are not following the truth of the one true God. "Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods."(Joshua 24:16). The people have turned away from the God who created them, the God who escorted them through the Exodus out of slavery in Egypt. The people have turned from the truth and have fallen for false gods.

False gods and empty idols are everywhere. As we move through this time of economic downturn (and I wish no economic hardship on anyone) the one positive I have heard from a number of folks is "Perhaps this will cause us all to rethink what is really important." It is not the possessions we can buy or the nice home we live in, it is a relationship with the one true God who created and redeemed us that gives us life and hope. Through a trip across the Red Sea and by hanging on a tree in Golgotha, our Lord came to save us. Rituals and traditions have their place but if they do not point us to the God who created and redeemed us they are only empty religious idols. Religion can serve many purposes and be used for good or evil.

"Religion itself can be an idol: I often wonder if religion is the enemy of God. It's almost like religion is what happens when the Spirit has left the building." Bono of U2 as Quoted in FaithWorks.

See you on Sunday.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen

Dinner with Strangers

I just got back from a honeymoon cruise and it was the first time I ever took a cruise. There was so much food but the interesting part was sitting with other people for formal dinner in the evening. The first night we met a daughter taking her mom on the cruise for her birthday. Another couple the next night joined us and they just got married a week ago. The funny thing is that we didn't talk to them at all the first time we met them. It's kind of funny in human nature to be very quiet in the beginning of meeting with people even though some of us in nature are not very silent but yet very talkative. As the cruise went along, we somehow got to know everybody and at the end, we were talking, taking pictures of each other, and sending our farewells to everybody. It seemed like the breaking of bread every night got people looser and want to be more sociable.

I think this is what God meant it to be. Food seems to get people in the mood to break down those barriers and lead use to get to know each other. There are many times in the Bible that Christ just sat down with food and started to talk and get to know people. I think this is definitely the way to go. If you get an opportunity to sit down with strangers and have a meal, I would encourage you to do so. It is a way to connect with one another and that's why I love to host dinner parties. I don't think Christ ever passed up an opportunity to get to know his fellow man and we should not either.

The new President of the United States has just been declared. If you think about it, many people from different backgrounds, races, political parties, and occupations voted for Obama and that is why he won. It was almost like a whole variety of people came together for dinner and voted him into office. I hope that fellowship continues so that we can truly say that we are part of the UNITED States of America.

In Christ,

Stan Yee

"Embrace the Stress! Celebrate the Stress!"

That wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear from my boss yesterday at a management team meeting, as he was talking about our role as leaders. I don't like stress, and I hate anxiety, and one often triggers the other. That's one reason I changed jobs a year or so ago--to cut down on stress. And thankfully God answered my prayer and brought me to work with a great group of people. The work is just as complex and difficult, but the culture is collaborative and people supportive. What a blessing!

So, later that same day I went to our weekly Small Group Bible Study, where we were studying Romans. [That book can be stressful enough trying to understand!] In our discussion, our group of "saints" (forgiven sinners, remember?) talked about the passages in Romans 8:

"If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rom 8:31)
"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: "For you sake we face death all day long..." (Rom 8:35-36)
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

And I realized, I have no need to fear, no need to accept stress or anxiety from myself or from other "powers" or circumstances or anthing else under the sun. My boss was right, we as leaders or non-leaders should embrace the stress, celebrate the stress, for nothing can separate us from God, and nothing can drag us down unless we choose to let it!

Amen!

Blessings!

The election is tomorrow. It seems the negative ads are on over-drive; it feels as if my hopes and dreams are under siege. The "attack" ads may be directed toward opposing candidates and issues, but it feels as if I am being attacked. I guard my reactions and take care when talking with others. I worry about what will happen tomorrow and the days that follow. Democracy doesn't always lead to consensus - will the divisions and disagreements continue and will worry and fear grow? I wonder what our attention will be focused on once the campaigns are over.

I tend to turn to two places - the psalms (see Psalms 42, 46, 65, 71, 119) and the writings of Paul to find comfort and hope. Our times are not unique - as much as we like to think they are; our struggles and fears are the story of humankind. Paul's words wisely instruct us how we might act if we truly are followers of Jesus.

May we meditate and aspire to these words from Romans, chapter 12, verses 12-18:
Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

"Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,.." (Hebrews 12:1)

God promises in Hebrews 12:1 that you will never be alone. You are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. None of us got to this place in our life of faith on our own. We are where we are based upon our relationships. You may have some or many relationships which represent pain and wounds, each of us has some of those. You also have relationships that nourish and sustain, and offer healing and hope.

This weekend many churches will be observing "All Saints." A Saint by Martin Luther's definition is "A forgiven sinner." Who are some of the forgiven sinners whose fingerprints of faith are plastered all over you? These could be people who are living or dead? The promise of our risen Savoir Jesus the Christ is that these folks surround us each day. They lift us up and they offer us strength to persevere when we want to give up on all things, even our life of faith.

Who are your Saints? The giants of the faith God has blessed you with for the journey who in large, small, planned and serendipitous ways have been the risen Jesus to you in the times you needed it the most?

Find some space for silent prayer this day, to call upon the saints in your life living and dead. Ask that they might come once more to, "..surround you...to lay aside each weight and the sin that clings so closely....and to run with perseverance the race that is set before you." We are stuck where we are if we think we can make it on our own. We have hope of an adventuresome journey with Jesus if we rely on the companionship of the "cloud of witnesses " who surround us.

See you on Sunday!

Still in one peace,

God's Family and Paul's Prayer for Spiritual Growth

Ephesians Ch. 3 Vs: 14-20

14 "For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. 16 That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man. 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length, depth and height, 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.
Amen" NKJV

My bible footnotes say, "The family of God includes all who have believed in him in the past, all who believe in the present, and all who will believe in the future. We are a family because we have the same Father. God promises his love and power to his family, the church."

Our human story can be both a blessing and a struggle. It is truly a blessing to be able to look back at those who have helped to form us spiritually. I'm so blessed to have had parents who made sure God's word and the stories in the Bible were shared with my siblings and I as we were growing up. I also count as a blessing my exposure to different denominations within my family, Catholicism on my fathers side and a strong Lutheran, Protestant tradition on my mothers side. Mark has a cousin who celebrates Judaism and Jewish traditions through marriage. We welcome their stories and the celebrations they share with us.

It is not as easy and pleasant however, to include those difficult ancestors or difficult family members or friends that cross our path, the self-righteous, the alcoholics, those who mentally struggle. My family tree has a few. God has given me both, reminding me to welcome both, to press through the hard stuff to get to the good stuff.

In verse 17, Paul prays that Christ will dwell in the Ephesians heart through faith, that they would be rooted and grounded in love. We are called to start at our roots. We can see God's love and promises in the struggles in life. God expects us to make something of the life he has given us and he gives us the tools we need, an open invitation for a relationship with Him and the gift of His Holy Spirit.
"All things work together for good for those who love God" (Romans 8 vs:28)

Father God,

We thank you for the rich inheritance of saints that go before us. We thank you for the saints you have given us to walk with here on earth. We thank you for the stories that shape us into the people we are today. We thank you for your Holy Spirit that is continually at work in our lives, bringing us together as the family of God.

Amen

Matthew 20:29-34

20:29 As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.
20:30 And two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"
20:31 The crowd sternly told them to be quiet, but they cried out all the more, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
20:32 And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, "What do you want Me to do for you?"
20:33 They said to Him, "Lord, we want our eyes to be opened."
20:34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.

Did you ever notice that in many passages about Jesus, He has a large crowd following him wherever He Goes? Many I'm sure were truly His followers but I'm also sure that some were there with Him just for the excitement, the "Wow!" factor if you will. Did you also notice that
often times the crowd tried to control the situation, especially when things get awkward or inconvenient for them. When the blind men cried out for help to Jesus "The crowd sternly told them to be quiet." The blind men would have none of that and neither would Jesus. He stopped, probably much to the annoyance of some and the curiosity of others and asked them what they wanted. "Lord, we want our eyes to be opened." they said.

If the crowd had their way the men would still be blind and lost. Notice what is said next.."Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him." This is what Jesus is all about, compassion...seeking and saving the lost. I notice in scripture that whenever Jesus has a personal moment with anyone He is "all in". Not just wanting to heal physically but especially spiritually as well. Jesus not only opened the physical eyes of those men but I believe He also opened their spiritual eyes. They followed Him but for the right reasons and with a different perspective than most in the crowd. Do you think that the next time Jesus came across a blind man those two would tell that person to be quiet. No way! They'd say "hey Jesus over here please!"

No matter what "the crowd" says or thinks, when we're down and out and we cry out to Jesus He is "all in" every time! That is God's nature loving, compassionate, slow to anger and ready to heal and forgive no matter what the crowd wants.

Amen

The headlines, the financial markets, the candidates, the 24/7 news channels - everywhere we turn we hear, see and are confronted with all the reasons we need to be afraid. What's an anxious person to do?

Turn to Psalm 46. Its words speak through the ages of how God is with us: yesterday, today and tomorrow. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
We can turn to God; God is our safe place.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
Everything around us is changing, we are not afraid.
though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
It's hard to find solid ground, we are not afraid.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
Life giving water, God lives here.
God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.
God is everywhere; we are not alone.
The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
Things are falling apart; God speaks.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
We can turn to God; God is our safe place.
Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
We see God's hand everywhere we look.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
God breaks the weapons that threaten us.
"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth."
We stop; we listen; we acknowledge God.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
We can turn to God; God is our safe place.

I invite you to take Psalm 46 and write your own response to each verse.

May you find time this week to stop and claim this truth: God is with us and God is with you,
Vikki

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

How many things are really important to you? What would be on a list of what you value the most?.....family? career? Jesus? friendship? traveling? a possessions(s)? health? Your church?...

There are many things that matter to us when it comes right done to it. It is maybe even impossible to say what we rank first and foremost. Most often when we are questioned about such things and "forced" to come up with an answer it is a trick to get us in trouble with those who disagree with us. Or it may be a trap to get us in trouble with someone who feels disappointed our relationship is not reflected in our response. There is no way our answer to such questions can please everyone.

In Matthew 22: 34-40 the Pharisee's come to Jesus wanting to know out of all the laws in the scripture (and there are 613), which one is the most important. They asked this to "...test him... (Matthew 22:36). Teacher which commandment is the greatest? Jesus said to them ' You shall love the lord your God with all your heart .....the second is like it . You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Jesus once again rose to the occasion and responded with wisdom while under pressure. Love your God and love your neighbor, this is the most critical thing you can do.

First, are you under pressure at this time? Are there forces that are causing you to question your value and purpose in the world? Jesus' advice would be to take more time to focus on the relationship you have with your God. It is also important to remember that we are called to "...love others as we love ourselves..." Remember God created you, loves you and has invested in you through the life death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO GOD!

Second, in this week's Denver paper, Archbishop Desmond Tutu was quoted as saying, "There is no way we are going to win the war on terrorism as long as there are conditions in the world that leave people desperate." You may not know an international terrorist, but I am confident you do know someone that is feeling desperate? One of the best ways you can love another in Jesus name might be to ask another "how are you?....how are your dreams? ..how is your anxiety?...., and take time to listen. Desperate people will do desperate things and the only way to break that cycle is to address the source of desperation.

See you on Sunday.

Still in one peace,

Five Principles for passing on faith
(The Youth & Family Institute, www.tyfi.org)

1. Faith is formed by the power of the Holy Spirit through personal trusted relationships - often in our own homes.
2. The church is a living partnership between the ministry of the congregation and ministry of the home.
3. Where Christ is present in faith, the home is church, too.
4. Faith is caught more than it is taught.
5. If we want Christian children and youth, we need Christian adults.

The Rites of Passage ministries at GGCC try to form around these principles. At key points in a child's journey of faith, we gather parents/caregivers/guardians and young people to equip and support them in passing on the faith. At worship on Sunday mornings, in weekly youth events and occasional workshops - we the "church" cannot teach faith to children or to one another. It takes more than that!

Moses shares God's vision with us for how we might pass on faith in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. We are to keep the words "The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your might." in our hearts and talk about them when we are home and when we are away. In fact, we are figuratively (not literally) tattoo them on our hands and foreheads; and paint them over our doors.

Talk about God all the time? Really? Is that even possible? The best way I know to talk about God all the time is gratefulness. To try to be grateful for all things, good and not so good. Thank you God for food to eat, thank you God for a home to sleep, thank you God for being able to say thank you. When we adopt an attitude of gratefulness we can't help but talk about God all the time. When we adopt an attitude of gratefulness we begin to be more aware of God's presence in our lives. An attitude of gratefulness allows us to thank God for our relationships and for God's love and mercy even when it seems there is little to be thankful for.

May you find LOVE tattooed on your heart and painted over your doorways as gratitude enables you to find God everywhere. May you find that passing on faith is a way of life, not just an hour or two a week. May you find God's presence this day,

Vikki

Wednesday, October 22 - DEVOTIONS - This Weeks

Acts Ch. 7 Vs. 48-50

48" The Most High does not live in temples made by human hands. As the prophet says, 49" Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. Could you build me a temple as good as that, asks the Lord? Could you build me such a resting place?" 50" Didn't my hands make both heaven and earth?"

Although Stephan knew the importance of the temple, he did not hesitate to tell the religious leaders, the temple was not more important then God. God is not limited to a house of worship. Stephan's words angered the religious leaders and like many of the prophets he was killed.

How can we spread God's message of peace and hope, in a world that can be hostile to God's word?

The footnotes in my bible ask:
God wants to live in us. Is he living in you?

God calls us to be in harmony with the divine that lives within each of us, through a daily life of prayer and service, which is not exhausting or selfish, service which is grounded in God's love. We quickly learn that service without God's spirit is tiresome and may seem hopeless. When we invite God's spirit into that which feels troublesome or monotonous, something remarkable happens. The most troubling or mundane work can turn into temples for God and we will learn to recognize when we are walking on holy ground.

Jesus conducted his ministry as the opportunity arose, through everyday life. He took time to stop as he was traveling to heal the women with a hemorrhage. He stopped and touched the lepers who felt lost and hopeless. He made room for little children on his lap. Jesus went out of his way to minister to all of human kind. An act of service can allow God to work in us as well as bring God's love to others. It can also express our gratitude for God's boundless love and grace.

Lord Jesus,

We thank you for the work you have given each of us to do. We thank you for the grace you have showered on us. May we trust in your Spirits strength and guidance as we go out into the world. Help us to recognize holy ground as we walk with you daily. Amen

We live in anxious and difficult times.

Eugene H. Peterson writes, "Be still and know. Civilization is littered with unsolved problems, baffling impasses. The best minds of the world are at the end of their tether. The most knowledgeable observers of our condition are badly frightened."

That doesn't sound good.

"The most relevant contribution that Christians make at these points is the act of prayer-determined, repeated, leisurely meetings with the personal and living God. New life is conceived in these meetings." - Eugene H. Peterson in "Earth to Altar"

Yea, that's easy for him to say. We just pray and everything will be okay. No more worries, no more problems, no more fear. Okie dokie then. Problem solved. Not so fast. We want ANSWERS. We want them NOW. We need HELP. Is prayer really going to help us?

Maybe you don't how or where to start. Maybe you don't have any spare time. Maybe you aren't sure what to do (on my knees?) or say (fancy words that God likes.) So...maybe you don't really believe it can make a difference.

Well, I suggest that we'll never know if we don't try. Let me reassure you that there is not a wrong way to pray. I repeat- there is not a wrong way to pray. (Well, dishonesty would be a wrong way, but that's not what we're talking about here.) God isn't going to judge your methods, words, or location. There's not a scorebook where God logs when you prayed, how many times you prayed or why you prayed. All that matters is that you turn to the living and loving God in your fear and anxiety.

Take a chance and risk sharing what's on your heart with God. Talk to God in your car, doing laundry, working out, logging onto your computer, or wherever you happen to be. Do it over and over, even when it seem repetitious and even you are tired of hearing it. Share with God your hurts and sorrows. If you want to throw in a thank you now and then, go for it. But our God is big enough to hear all of what's going on in our hearts, our lives and our world. Don't hold back.

And who knows - maybe our prayers will indeed result in "new life". But we'll never know if we don't try.

God is with you,
Vikki

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I love the fearless attitude Jesus has in the text for this Sunday, Matthew 22:15-22. The text tells us that the Pharisee's came to "...entrap Jesus in what he said... (Matthew 22:15)." At issue is the question, to whom do you place your highest allegiance? Is it "the emperor..," or is it "..God?" (Matthew 22:16) Either way that Jesus answers will give his opponents ample room to construct an argument to say, "that is wrong."

Jesus shows great wisdom and asks for a coin. He points out that the Emperor is on one side and God is on the other side. Then Jesus said to them, "Give to the Emperor the things that are the Emperors and to God the things that are Gods." (Matthew 22:22)

Give the Government (Emperor) what belongs to the Emperor, but place ultimate trust in God. Trust in God to provide all that you need and give back with generosity.

There is an African story that goes like this....

There was a knock on the door of a missionaries hut. Answering, the missionary found one of the native boys holding a large fish in his hands.

The boy said, "You taught us what tithing (to give God an offering of 10% of your income) is, so here ---I've brought you my tithe."

As the missionary gratefully took the fish, he asked the young lad, "If this is your tithe, where are the other nine fish?"

At this point the young boy beamed and said, "Oh, they're still in the river. I'm going back to get them now."

See you Sunday.

The Good News Bad NewsBy Julie WeldonMatthew 6:34 (New International Version)34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.Worry...there is a lot of it going around these days. I know Halloween is just a couple of weeks away but it sure feels like there are "Grinches" everywhere trying their best to steal Christmas. Between the politicians and the financial analysts the news sounds terrible. That is exactly what the "Grinch" wants us to focus on, the Bad news!Jesus wants us to remember the Good News and share it with all the world. Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"
Mark 16:15
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.Luke 2:10
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.Matthew 11:5
The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.Acts 5:42
Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.Acts 14:15
"Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them. The Grinch can't steal Christmas. Remember the end of the story, all the who's in Whoville gathered to worship and sing holding hands heralding in what evil tried to crush and failed.
Jesus is the Christ and Through him we can work together to feed the hungry, heal the sick, clothe the naked, give shelter to the homeless and help Jesus find the lost. Share the good news with someone today!Abba Father I thank you for the wealth of blessings you have placed in my life. Help me to trust that you are the only treasure I need. Help me to see the needs of your children and do what I can to help them for you. Amen

1 Samuel 26

"The Ziphites went to Saul at Gibeah and said, "Is not David hiding on the hill of Hakilah, which faces Jeshimon?"

Who are you listening to?

Yes, right now! Is it the still small voice of GOD or is it your mind reminding you of what you forgot or left undone yesterday or is it worry about what you have to do today to make sure everything goes as planned tomorrow.

Today's reading is an excellent story of David sparing Saul's life AGAIN. But it would all be unnecessary if Saul would give up his jealousy of David and stop listening to those around him who are encouraging him to take the wrong path.

There is another story here about listening and following. Saul went into the Desert of Ziph with 3,000 soldiers and when David saw that they had gone to sleep he asked Ahimelech and Abishai "Who will go down into the camp with me to Saul? I'll go with you, said Abishai." Ahimelech did not volunteer. He heard, but did not choose to go. Facing 3,000 enemy soldiers it was the safe choice to make, but Abishai facing the same decision chose to go with David. It doesn't give more detail and it doesn't say what occurred when Abishai met up with Ahimelech after he came back out of Saul's camp with David.

How do we know Abishai made the right decision? How do we know who to follow, who to listen to?

Versus 8 - 10 "Abishai said to David. Today GOD has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of my spear: I won't strike him twice. But David said to Abishai, Don't destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the LORD's anointed and be guiltless. As surely as the LORD lives he said, the LORD himself will strike him; either his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish."

Abishai followed David and David was following GOD. We all make mistakes! Every human makes mistakes! But if someone tries to deceive you or lie to you to get you to do something... it's not GOD's way.

In the Old Testament GOD sent prophets so people would hear the word of GOD. In the New Testament GOD sent his son to bring the word to life. Today, right now, pray to GOD, to listen today to GOD's word. Pray for discernment so we can distinguish the word from the Ziphites from the word of GOD. AMEN!

Precious Father, Loving GOD, Holy Spirit, I pray for all the saints that have gone before us providing us with paths to your word and I pray for all the saints that surround us with hope, faith, and love. AMEN!

Galatians 6 vs: 3 NLT

3 "If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important."

C. S. Lewis wrote that there are no ordinary people.

"You have never talked to a mere mortal." Human beings are the only living creatures with an immortal soul. "Next to the Blessed Sacrament," Lewis wrote, "your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses."

When Jesus was asked which command in the law is the most important? Jesus replied without hesitation, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind." This is the first and most important command. The second is like the first. "Love your neighbor as you love yourself."

We have all been blessed at times to see Gods love, His life flowing through the lives of ordinary believers and into situations and circumstances we as onlookers thought hopeless or unbearable. God is Good! He gives us Himself, He gives us His strength, He gives us His own Spirit. If we are willing to let God reveal himself to us through others, he will direct all of our paths. God gives us the tools to be a people of hope.

We are so blessed at GGCC to have a leader who lives by example in Claudia. She has given us the ability to reach out to others through the Gathering Place, Paris Elementary and Open Door. It has been great to hear from GGCC participants how these outreach opportunities have touched their lives. Thanks GGCC staff for being the committed leaders you are.

Father God,

We thank you for the word. We thank you for the gift of faith that sees your word lived in the lives of ordinary people. We thank you for your Spirit, for gifts waiting to be discovered. We thank you for people we have yet to meet and the challenges we have yet to overcome. We are a people of hope. We know you will live this life with us and through us.

Amen

What does a covenant have to do with following Jesus? The word "covenant" is referred to 312 times in the NRSV Bible, primarily in the Old Testament. A covenant is a promise, an agreement between two parties, or a description of how individuals will relate to one another.

God had covenants with Israel and God's chosen people. The people always broke them.

God finally came up with a lasting covenant that had little to do with what we do and more to do with what God has done / is doing and how much God loves us. From Hebrews, chapter 13, verses 20 & 21:
Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Does this eternal covenant free us from any responsibility? Actually, no. We keep our end of the covenant by following Jesus in how we love, forgive and care for one another.

A covenant must be pretty important, after all it's been on the top of God's agenda throughout all of history. One key covenant relationship we have together as a faith community are our baptismal promises: we welcome a person into God's family as our sister or brother in Christ, we promise to pray for them and support them in growing in faith. Just because you weren't present at my baptism (oh so many years ago) doesn't mean we don't have that sister/brother relationship. Paul tells us, that "anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him." 1 Cor 6:17

We are in a covenant relationship with one another because of our covenant relationship with Jesus. But, being human beings we easily forget our connection to one another. Especially those of: different ages, different political beliefs, different ethnic backgrounds, different financial status, different gender, different geographical region and all those differences that separate us.

And so it is important that we intentionally gather as people who follow Jesus and renew covenants of how we will relate to one another. Each Sunday morning in worship, we gather because of our covenant with God our Creator to worship, praise and thank God. We also gather to renew our covenant as a community of faith to "gather people that they might be made into disciples who serve the living Christ in the emerging world." Each group in our missional community must take the time to covenant how they will relate to one another, what is their purpose for getting together and that they will hold one another accountable in grace and love. You might take the time to create a covenant - or promise - of how you will be in healthy relationship with the people you live, work or study with. Not an eternal covenant - but one that respects one another and honors God. One that changes as you all grow (or fail to grow) in your relationship with God and one another.

May your relationships grow and flourish because of God's eternal covenant with us and because of our covenant with another through Jesus,
Vikki

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The people of Israel surrounded Aaron (their leader on the ground) in a threatening way and said to him, "Come make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." (Moses was up on the mountain top with God). - Exodus 32:1

We, like the people of the Exodus, live in a time of fear and anxiety. We ask "God, where are you? Why are the markets down? Why is there war? Why do I have personnel pain?" Just as in Exodus the people take aim with their fear and anxiety upon the leader(s) (political, business, community, church, etc). They can see when they feel an absence of God.

I ask that all of us understand the stress we are communally under. Take an extra deep breath of the Holy Spirit and pray for inner peace. We are all in the same boat. No one in the world has immunity from the economic crisis.

Leaders, I pray especially for you that you receive an extra dose of God's grace and peace. That you as leaders might not take personally the expressions of anxiety, hurt and stress people may hurl your way.

Angelina Jolie in the October 5, 2008 USA Today described the leadership of movie director, Clint Eastwood, this way: It's not just in strength or just a sense of cool," she says. "He's such a gentleman. When you work on a film with him, he treats every single person on the crew with an enormous amount of gratitude and respect no matter what they're doing. And he really makes a point to show it and encourages the best in everybody. If somebody screws up, he makes them feel like it wasn't their fault and they can try again. That kind of leadership and grace is very, very rare."

Leadership of "grace" might be rare, but it remains the greatest transformational force the world has ever known.

The God of the Exodus who parted the Red Sea, and our Savior Jesus Christ who conquered death, are the ultimate examples of "Leadership and Grace."

Economists and political pundits, for some days, weeks, maybe months to come, will blitz us with a message of fear that breeds doubt in all things (do not get me wrong - there is truth in the network news, but is it the ultimate "truth"?). Is your ultimate faith in economics and politics, or the living Christ? Do you dwell more with a newspaper and in front of a TV screen with national news, or do you spend the majority of your time in the presence of your God with scripture in hand and prayers in your heart? The answers to these questions will inform you as to what shapes you as a human being. Where is the target of your faith?

In closing, I offer this prayer from Glen E. Rainsley I have found helpful.

Mighty and compassionate God, you have extended to us promises of presence and forgiveness, grace and understanding. Through all history, these promises have been kept with a steadfastness that inspires faithfulness and nurtures belief. So it is with grateful hearts that we pray.

Help us to be enthusiastic participants in the ongoing campaign to do your will on earth as in heaven. You have showed us what is good. Grant us the courage to let our lives be shaped by the goodness you reveal. In a world of energy-sapping frustrations, diversions from noble goals, and infatuations with unworthy idols, guide us by the power and direction of your Spirit. Enable us to convey the brightness of joy to persons in grief or despair, to bring healing to those suffering illness or abuse, to make peace in the midst of tensions or conflict. Permit us to perform well those things you require of us-doing justice and loving kindness and walking humbly upon your way.

You do not ask us to cast a vote in your favor. You do ask us to commit our lives fully to your service and care. Therefore, strengthen us in spirit and faith. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. (Written by Glen E. Rainsley and adapted by KLW, 2005)

Amen.

Still in One Peace,

I had heard this story before in a time of change... You never know when your prayers are going to change the world!

Corinthians 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Most people have never heard of "Auntie Cooke," but I guarantee you that you'll get to know her in glory! She arrived in Chicago in 1868 as a perfect stranger, but she immediately became involved in D.L. Moody's church when he was just thirty-one years old. She described him years later, as a ‘diamond in the rough', and someone who needed the divine unction and power.

During a camp meeting in 1871, she felt an intense burden to pray for Moody. So, along with her friend, Miss Hawxhurst, Auntie Cooke began praying for him that he'd be filled with the anointing power of the Holy Spirit. While Moody was unsure of this need, nevertheless, he asked the two ladies to meet with him every Friday afternoon and they began to earnestly pray. Moody's hunger increased for the power of the Spirit and the Friday before the Great Chicago Fire, Ms. Cooke testified, "Mr. Moody's agony was so great that he rolled on the floor and in the midst of many tears and groans cried to God to be baptized with the Holy Ghost and fire."

It was shortly thereafter that Moody went to New York to raise funds for the rebuilding of the church that was destroyed in the fire. While walking down Wall Street in New York, Moody was hit with power! In fact, Moody recalled how he cried, "Hold, Lord, it is enough!" Throughout his life, he reluctantly talked about that experience, but Moody testified how this was the turning point in his ministry.

Moody stated, "I went to preaching again, the sermons were not different; I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted. I would not now be placed back where I was before that blessed experience if you should give me all the world."

The lasting legacy of D.L. Moody's ministry was connected to two ladies that you'll never read stories about (except maybe, here) - but whose own, lasting legacy is counted in glory! Do you want to have a lasting legacy? Become an intercessor!

During this difficult time in our country - let's spend time interceding for our pastors, evangelists, spiritual leaders, to have the fire of God upon them! Power only comes through prayer - and without any power - how are we going to change the world?

God's Account Still Gives Dividends

Matthew 6:25-34
"...What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting so that you can respond to God's giving." (the Message)

Jesus teaches us in the 6th chapter of Matthew about worry. Read the entire passage for assurance today.

During these uncertain economic times, I am daily reminded that I can still do what God calls me to do as part of his master plan. I am a carefully crafted flower in His vast field of plenty. Every single flower is beautiful in His sight. I am not like the flower that is planted next to me - that's because God's field of plenty is diversified. He is able to meet everyone's needs. Quit the worry. Trust God with every detail of your life.

Tomorrow will happen regardless of you or me. Instead of worrying about your bank account today, go to God's bank account. Open the door of love, understanding and peace. Make a withdrawal from the account that never runs out. No bailouts required.

Dear Jesus,
Give me assurance to relax. Help me to draw from your account and to let your continually renewing dividends fill every nook and cranny of my life today. Amen.

Remember Jesus

Are you in love with Jesus? Before you remember anything, remember him. If you forget anything, don't forget him.

Oh, but how quickly we forget. So much happens through the years. So many changes within. So many alterations without. And, somewhere, back there, we leave him. We don't turn away from him...we just don't take him with us. Assignments come. Promotions come. Budgets are made. Kids are born, and the Christ... the Christ is forgotten.

Has it been a while since you stared at the heavens in speechless amazement? Has it been a while since you realized God's divinity and your carnality? If it has, then you need to know something. He is still there. He hasn't left. (Max Lucado)

God's love is with us always. Reach out to Him today, and forget about all your worries and concerns. God knows all and sees all. However, God wants us to remember Him especially during these times. Our God is faithful to us each day; let's continue to be faithful to Him. Remember Jesus by sharing his love with someone today.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we come to You today in the name of Jesus. Thanking You for another beautiful day to enter into Your presence. We open our hearts to You, giving You permission to get involved in our lives. Father, help us to remember that Christ is with us on this day. Help us to focus on Your will for our lives, as we continue to show Your love to those around us. Father, we glorify You and praise You during our good and bad times. We thank You for giving us Your son Jesus Christ. We thank You for the gift of life. Father, give us the knowledge and wisdom to be successful here on earth. That we may glorify You in Heaven. We ask all these things in Jesus name,

Amen

Saturday, October 4th was the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis was born in the Umbrian city of Assisi about the year 1182. His parents were wealthy merchants and Francis grew up a privileged young man. When he was about twenty he went off in armor with dreams of glory. He was captured and spent a year as a prisoner of war until he was ransomed. Upon his return he suffered a serious illness with a slow recovery. These experiences brought about a spiritual crisis where Francis ultimately took on a mission of literal church repair as well as to renew the call of the church to the radical simplicity of the gospel, to the spirit of poverty, and to the image of Christ in his poor. Others followed Francis and the order of Franciscans began and amazingly won approval of the church as the pope was moved by the humility of Francis and his followers.

Francis left few writings but his life - literally the embodiment of his message - gave rise to numerous legends and parables. His spirituality reflected joy and freedom in turning the values of the world on their head. He desired only to live out the spirit of the gospel and Jesus' teachings. Francis identified with all of creation, teaching that all are a reflection of God our creator's love. Francis identified with the poor and rejected material wealth. He was committed to nonviolence (in an age of crusades) as a way to live out Jesus' commandment to love and respect human life created in God's image. Francis' relationship with the earth and all of creation, including animals, the elements, the poor and sick as well as the rich represented a new model of community that still speaks to us today.

May we understand Jesus' and Francis' call to turn toward the cross instead of to the world; to respect all of creation - from the dirt on which we walk, to the sun shining in the sky, to every single human being - as holy creations of God our Father; and to seek peace, practice kindness and share joy. Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be
consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are
born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

God be with you this week,
Vikki

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The economic bailout? Are you for it or against it? As of this writing the senate has voted for it, the president is for it, and the house is split headed into a vote. What does God think?

I had lunch with a friend today and the subject of the economy came up. Each of us had some anxiety over the topic and the uncertainty of it all. What I confessed to him is that being a middle class American by economic terms makes me one of the wealthiest people in the history of the planet. I have and own much! The bank and I own a house in Highlands Ranch, I have 4 cars (cumulative value maybe 21,000 in real assets, we drive experienced cars), two kids in college and a schnauzer that loves us unconditionally. Nowhere in the scriptures is it said "Dave I want you (or whoever) to own more stuff and have more things." God does offer economic directives in the scriptures. These directives do not seem to focus much on human collection or accumulation?

The key economic direction from God seems to be to see all that we have as coming from God. In Sundays text it says, "There was a landowner who leased land to tenants." (Matthew 21:33-46) We are not the "owners" we are the" tenants" in a world God created. Over and over again the scriptures remind us that we have a Savoir who is passionate about the least and the lost. Will those of us who still have too much (yes, I said TOO much on LOAN to us from God) in a time of economic fear cutback our giving prematurely in an attempt to manage our anxiety, or will we who are able strive to grow our generosity in a time of increased need. I know some of you have been affected by the economy in a very adverse way, and I pray for you and if I or GGCC can be of service to you let us know. You are in our prayers.

Our faith has an opportunity to be shaped in times of adversity. It is in times like these that we come to the truth of what we really rely upon, "our credit," or "our faith in the risen Jesus who has conquered all things even the tomb!"....?

Will we who are able, prayerfully and faithfully grow our generosity for the world? Bono of the rock group U2 spoke to the United Nations this week. Here is one of the things he had to say, "It's extraordinary to me that the United States can find $700 billion to save Wall St. and the entire G8 cannot find $25 billion to save 25,000 children who die every day from preventable diseases."

If the economy has ushered your family into hardship, you have my prayers and the prayers of GGCC.

For many of us we are fine. The biggest concern I hear from most folks is how bad might it get? I have no exact economic answer for that question. What I do know is that "The tomb is empty!" We live with a hope that knows no bounds. Jesus the Christ brings hope to us now and tells us we have an eternal home that exceeds all human comprehension!

Let us place our earthly hope and eternal lives in the faith of Jesus' economic system versus a bailout plan of human origin.

See you on Sunday.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen

Fearless

Sometimes I wish that I would still possess some of the characteristics when I was growing up as a kid. One of them is being fearless. As a kid, I would just go do it without any thinking of sacrificing security or safety. I don't mean that I was not scared as a kid. There are plenty of things that I was scared of as a kid. I mean sometimes I don't hesitate or think about what is going to happen to me. In the scriptures, the children ran and came to Jesus but some of his disciples want to chase them off. Jesus says no way and wanted all the children to come to him. Jesus says that you have to be like a child to enter the kingdom of heaven. I feel that one of these characteristics in being like a child is being fearless. Enter the gates and you don't want to expect but it is just truly wonderful. As an adult, we would probably think about am I wearing the proper clothes and shoes or how much is this going to cost to enter the gates or did I park my car in the proper place at the gates. We should enter the kingdom of heaven in amazement and trust God that it is just wonderful.

Remember that story of Lot and his mom. Lot kept asking God to save the city if there was a certain amount of good people at Sodom and Gomorrah. It ended up he and his mom left the city and God says don't turn back. Keep walking away from the city but his mom was worried about all her possession, valuables, and what not. She looked back and turned into stone. Moving forward is being part of fearless. You don't know what is in store for you in the future but with God, it has got to be bright but probably pretty hard. Life is not supposed to be easy. If it were, then everybody would be pretty lazy. I remember a scene from a movie called "A league of our own" where Gina Davis and Tom Hanks are having a conversation and she says baseball is just got too hard. He had a great line. It is supposed to be hard. If it was easy, everybody would do it. It's the hard that makes it great. Life in Christ is hard and that's what makes it great. Being fearless is what makes life awesome. God gives us the power to be fearless if we submit our life to Him.

I wanted to conclude with a quote in another movie. Jet Li is an incredible martial arts movie star and he made a movie a while back with the title of this devotion called Fearless. The trailer opens with a quote from a philosopher named Lao Tzu which is "Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself makes you fearless." I understand where he is coming from but I like the following which is "Helping others is strength. Letting God master you will make you fearless."

God's peace,

God in the Mountains

We've all had "mountain-top experiences", where you have such a high in your earthly life, that you just can't imagine anything higher on earth. Moses went up on a mountain to get away from the distractions around him and pray to God. And he found God there. Later Jesus went up on the mountain on occasion to get away from the crowd and pray to his Father. And God was there.
In my case, I never set foot in a physical church building until I was almost 23 years old. But prior to that, I believe God was making himself known to me in other settings, and he was wooing me to a relationship with him. I grew up in the mountains of northern New Mexico and southwest Colorado. My dad frequently took me hunting and fishing and camping up in the mountains from the time I was very young.

Somehow I knew there was a God every time I went up in the mountains. I marveled at the majesty of the mountains, the trees, the animals, and the beauty and interconnectedness of everything around me. I realized there was just no way that all these wonders, including us humans with our minds and our eyes and our souls, could have been created by accident. There was design behind all this. And I had never heard of the debate between evolution and creation theories.

So when I eventually heard about Jesus and accepted him into life on my 23rd birthday, while in a sleeping bag up in the mountains in Wyoming, it all seemed to fit. It was proper. This was right for me. I found God up in the mountains, but He already was calling me to him.

Thank you dear Lord, for loving me enough to come after me, up on the mountain top and down in the valleys, and everywhere in between.

Amen!

Ephesians 2:8-10

8 For by grace you are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:it is a gift of God.
9 Not of works lest any man should boast.
10 For we are all His workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works.

Today I visited Ephesus and stood upon the stage where the apostle Paul tried to preach to the Ephesians. It is an incredible place - a 25,000 seat amphitheater still used for music performances built into a cliff near the great library. Paul tried to preach to the Ephesians the good news of grace through salvation by faith in Jesus. The first time he tried he was shouted down by Silver merchants and other citizens of town and force to leave. The merchants feared that Paul's message would eventually convert the citizens from the worship in the great temple of Artemis in Ephesus. Ephesus depended on tourism - pilgrims from the Roman empire flocking to the temple to buy silver figurines and offer sacrifice there.
What is interesting that those Ephesians in Paul's day like people today often find God's message of love takes a back seat to money, business and the cares of the day. Paul kept trying and eventually the gospel spread throughout the region. An old English saying goes: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today... today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.

Everything that we have is a gift from God, we are his handiwork created for good work. Live everyday as God's handiwork created for good works.

ONE

There is an ad on television that says, "there is just one tree, one boy, one girl, one earth." The point, I think, is that we're all connected. Craig Groeschel, in the book IT - How Churches and Leaders Can Get it and Keep it tells us we are created to be inter-dependent rather than independent.

Paul writes in Philippians, chapter 2: "Make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose." (vs 2, NLT) A song I grew up singing at camp echoes in my mind as I write these words.
We are one in the Spirit,
We are one in the Lord...
And they'll know we are Christians by our love,
By our love,
Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love.
We will work with each other...
We will walk with each other... (©1966 Peter Scholte)

Getting a bunch of human beings to agree on anything is difficult! Being of like mind and like spirit are even harder. But Paul teaches us that Jesus calls us to be of one mind - His. "Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had." Phil 2:5 There is just one thing we are to aim for and that's Jesus. And God created us to do this together in unity: not independently, but inter-dependently! In Christian math there is another answer to the question one plus one:

     One = Jesus
     +One = we Jesus followers
     One = love

May God be with us, among us and between us, so that all will know we are Jesus followers by our love.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

My heart sank this week when I opened up the September 23rd paper. The headlines were "Is it the End?" (for Tom Nalen's knee the last remaining Bronco football player from the 90's super bowl teams) The other headline on page one was "GET IT RIGHT." (Senators grill financial leaders, resist plan to pass plan quickly)

Headlines reflect our priorities, right? If that's the case this past Wednesday in Denver we were caught up in the plight of our sports heroes and the financial markets. These are not bad things to be concerned over. I myself read both articles and I am sure many of you did.

However, on page 2 of that same paper (and this when my heart sank) it said, "Finland Reflects after Massacre." A young man in Finland had opened fire on a school killing 10 students with a gun his mother had purchased for him. How long Lord? How long must the children suffer? How long Lord?

You know they say if you are a few degrees off on earth when you shoot for the moon you will miss it by thousands of miles by the time you reach the moon. We can be close on our priorities and end up in the end missing our target by miles. There is nothing wrong with pulling for the Bronco's against the Chiefs this Sunday. There is nothing wrong with making sure you are a good financial manager and that your family is cared for. But are sports and money the main thing?

"If there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy....be of one mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind." (Philippians 2:1,2). The main thing is what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. The main thing is the relationship based on love that we now have with our Savior Jesus the Christ! All other matters are "garbage" as Paul says. (Philippians 3:8)

Sports heroes are great, but careers especially in football come and go very fast. Money is a wonderful resource that can do cool things, but as they say "you cannot take it with you."
Our youth are at risk. Our kids see the time and attention we give sports, and they watch how we spend our money and the stress we put upon financial goals.

What our youth are yearning for is to be front page news. They crave to be woven into the story of eternal truth and love Paul references in Philippians. If you want to rock the world and transform the culture in Jesus' name, find a youth ASAP and let them know they are a priority to you!

See you on Sunday.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen

Lost in Translation

Do you ever feel like you speak a different language than your teenagers or your spouse? While attempting to get a point across to a co-worker or friend, do you ever feel that your idea was somehow misconstrued, or it was simply lost in translation, figuratively speaking?

My husband's sister and brother in law from Iran are visiting us for two weeks. While it's wonderful to share time together with relatives, there is a huge barrier between us...we don't speak the same language. Unfortunately, they have not learned English like some of the younger relatives, and I have not learned to speak Farsi. (Yes, procrastination is one of my many faults, as learning my husband's native language has been on my list of things to do since we got married nearly 20 years ago.) While my husband does a good job of translating, there are times when we are in a more philosophical conversation and his frustration shows. He claims that he's unable to conjure up a word of like meaning between the languages, and that what we want to express was probably "lost in translation," literally speaking. Both his sister and I tease him that he could be telling the complete opposite of our intention, but neither of us would be the wiser! Other times, I am just thankful for our unspoken communication, the power of body language and a sincere smile.

I have gone through my entire adult life feeling like a "communication cripple." I find it difficult to express my thoughts verbally much of the time. Often times I find myself hoping my actions speak louder than my words, because my words seem inadequate. I am amazed when others speak eloquently and seem to effortlessly express their opinions and thoughts. I find myself wishing other people could just "know my heart" as God does...

1John 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence...

Gracious God, I am so thankful that you hear our heartspeak, when our words are inadequate! Help us feel your presence as we "walk the talk" and break down our literal and figurative language barriers.

"SUBMITTING YOURSELVES TO GOD""Humble yourselves before the Lord,
and he will lift you up."James 4.10

To be humble is to show feelings of humility rather than of pride, to be aware of one's shortcomings. It is hard to remember to be humble as we live our busy lives. We get caught up in the world around us that we don't step back and thank God for all of the things we have been blessed with in our lives. We should always submit ourselves to God and resist the temptations to boast our good fortunes. PRAYER:

Dear God, I ask for you to help me to be submissive to your ways. Help me to resist the selfishness that comes with being blessed in this world. I pray that if it is your will that helps me live my life. In your son's name, Jesus, I pray.

CHANGE

The changing of the seasons
Ah, today is the first day of autumn! Fall is indeed a glorious time of year with warm beautiful days and intense colors and a sky so blue it seems unreal. But shorter days and cooler temperatures require changes in schedules and planning.

The changing of the guard
This election year, change is the mantra of pretty much every candidate running from every party for any position. What will be changed and how will it be changed are not always so clear.

The only thing that is constant is change. ~ Heraclitus, 500 BCE
Change happens. Much change we can do nothing about. Change is generally inevitable. And yet, changing ourselves is an extremely difficult thing to do. As followers of Jesus we desire to change our hearts to be more like his. Jesus taught and continues to teach us that the "kingdom heaven is like..." and yet we still don't listen and turn our hearts toward his backward ways, "the last will be first..."

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-9

May we seek to allow God's spirit to turn our hearts in these times of ongoing change. May we leave fear, worry, envy and doubt behind. May we find that with the changing of the seasons, that we can embrace the change that God offers - peace and grace.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

John Wesley the founder of the Methodist church on the occasion of his being kicked out of the English pulpit, once said," There are few things in life more repugnant to reasonable people than the grace of God."

Now how could that be? Why would anyone find the grace (lavish unconditional love) of God "repugnant?" If you have ever read Matthew 20:1-16 and pondered it for very long you have a clear answer. In this text from Matthew, workers are hired by a vineyard owner. The workers are sent out at various times of the day. At the end of the day each of the laborers is paid the same. Those who joined the workforce late in the day have no problem with the results of the pay scale. However, the employees who worked all day for the same pay as those who worked a portion of a day are upset!

The all day workers who are paid what was agreed to but less than those who labored part of the day ask, "These men who were hired last worked only one hour ...yet you paid them the same as you paid us!" (Matthew 20:12)

The employer responds, "I have not cheated you. After all I paid you what I agreed to pay you." (Matthew 20:13). Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you jealous because I am generous with my money?" (Matthew 20:15)

That is a great line "...are you envious or jealous because I am generous?" There is not anger in how I am treated, but the anger shows up in how generous someone else is treated.

As you take some time to read Matthew 20:1-16 reflect upon where you might be in the story. And let us all give thanks to God, that God's grace travels at "repugnant levels" beyond anything we deserve.

See you on Sunday.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen

START
STOP
DO MORE
DO LESS

If you were at God's Grace last week, you heard these words spoken more than once.

This past week's sermon touched me in a big way.

All four of the phrases did as well.

I wanted to go to each station, but I simply did not have time. There were too many things whirling around to allow me to pray all the things on my heart and in my head.

Have you ever gone through times like this in your life? Do you ever wonder how am I going to get through this?

Well this past week's sermon reached me during this time.

And you know what I learned? I need to:

START- each day with a prayer of thanks to Jesus Christ our Lord for the start of a new day and the many blessing in my life.

STOP- forgetting that God is in the small stuff and the big stuff.

DO MORE- with my family, friends and my church.

DO LESS- fretting and worrying about things I can't change.

My thoughts and prayers are for all of you and all the people in your lives that are important to you.

My thanks to Pastor Dave for reminding me of what matters and to know that God is in the small stuff and the big stuff. With Him all things are possible. Amen

James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

This is the month Randy and I celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year marks our 27th! We look forward to the next 27 with the same joy that has blessed our first 27! Here is how our story began...

Before there was eHarmony I used a different match making service. GOD.
I had had it with being every one of my male friends shoulder to cry on about their girlfriends. I'd look at them and think, "Hello, girl right here! Not attached would love to date!" I could never manage to say that out loud though.

One night I got sad and mad and stormed out of my dorm room at 10pm by myself and walked to the oval on the CSU campus. (Not a good idea, thank you God for keeping me safe.) I found one of the ancient trees that graced the oval drive and began to pound my fist on its innocent bark. I cried and looked up at the stars and had a talk with God.

"Okay God, I know you have someone picked out for me and I will trust you with that choice. I will try my best to be patient. But...could you at least give me a sign so I don't let him get away!"

Fast forward about 3 years later and I am traveling with "Up With People". My cast happened to be traveling in Canada. The Canadian cast was the last one on my list of choices but I trusted God had a reason for putting me in that cast. My parents came to see me in the show we did in Calgary, Alberta. Our cast had a few days off after the show and I spent some time with my parents at their hotel. I was so glad for the rest until my dad proclaimed that we were going to entertain one of his best managers at a fancy restaurant. I was kind of being a pill about this news. I really wanted to spend the evening in my jammies. Who wants to spend their precious little time with a boring guy who works with her dad. My mom said that as she recalled that this guy was nice a bit short but nice. Humph...Off I went to get dressed up with heals to head to dinner.

As I walked into the restaurant it seemed mostly empty. I saw a handsome TALL young man stand up and wave at my dad...hmmm this could be better than I thought. As we got to the table my dad made the introductions and I stretched out my hand to shake this Randy Weldon guy's hand.

Time stopped in that moment. As my hand touched his, a powerful burst of electricity flowed through my fingertips and traveled through my entire body and out the tips of my toes. As I released my hand I remember looking at it thinking that was some static charge of electricity!

We talked all dinner and he walked us back to our hotel. I don't even remember my parents saying anything. As I lay in bed that night I got the giggles as I realized that burst of electricity was my sign! I got up and wrote in my journal..."I've met the man I'm going to marry! Thank-you God for the sign, I won't let him get away!"

Abba Father, Bless all of those who seek love and companionship. Grant them patience as they wait on your choice and your timing. Give them guidance as they date and explore who is right for them. Be with those who may have forgotten how their love began, renew their love with a freshness that mirrors your joy! Thank-you for a blessed 27 years! Amen.

1 Corinthians 3

"I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly, for since there is jealously and quarreling among you, are not you worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?... I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but GOD made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only GOD who makes things grow."

You shouldn't really read this. Stop now, it could make us humble. It could knock us off our high places.

I teach confirmation age kids on purpose, that means, I work with Vikki (bless her soul) to plant or sometimes to water the seed. I don't know, depending on the child of GOD, whether I am planting the seed, watering the plant, pruning it, or even harvesting. I know at this point I've carried it past the analogy Paul gave, but there have been times, not few, where I have harvested, I have been humbled, I have been taught by the very students I teach.

But, before I get sentimentally carried away, a note to my brothers in Christ. Let's read one sentence again. "Are we not acting like mere men?" This is one of those paradigms, one of those out of the box things. Aren't we supposed to be men, real men? Isn't that what the world teaches? What's Paul saying? Is he telling us we need to be girlie men? No, Paul with an open heart and an open mind is planting the seed or watering the plant in each of us saying we have to be Christly men. Not we should try to be, not we should think about it, be WE SHOULD BE Christly men. And I believe we should be Christly man, which includes every man, woman, and child on this earth. For we are nothing ... "but only GOD IS, who makes things grow."

"Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a ‘fool' so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in GOD's sight. As it is written: ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness' and again, ‘The LORD knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.' "

Who is really the ‘fool' of this world?

So... today... make a fool of yourself in front of man and know, from the depths of your heart, from the depths of your soul, that man may set standards, or obligations, or requirements, or rules, or ways we should live our lives, or the things we should buy, or the houses we should have, or what we should do, or what we should expect, but for HEAVENS sake! Yes, for HEAVENS sake let us not forget that it is not me, or you, or us, BUT GOD who makes things grow! AMEN!

Precious Father, Loving GOD, Holy Spirit, I pray for every man, woman, and child on this earth. I pray to be a fool for Christ. I pray you let me let go of the worldly things I trust, I follow, I believe in, and set my sights, my faith, my hope, my love, my life, on and in GOD AMEN!

Have you got IT? Have you seen IT? Where is IT? What is IT? How can you feel IT? When have you heard IT? Can you catch IT?

I asked these questions to some children at the first worship service yesterday. They get IT - it's not necessarily something you can see, hear, or touch. But through the wisdom of their childlike faith they were willing to catch IT and share IT. Can you?

We are in the midst of reading the book, IT How Churches and Leaders Can Get IT and Keep IT by Craig Groeschel in small groups and individually. (want a copy of the book? Contact the church office.) One way of understanding what IT is, is to consider the Holy Spirit.

In John 14:25-27, Jesus says, "I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."

Jesus tells us that God has sent us the Holy Spirit to help us, to remind us of his peace, to comfort us and to teach us. IT is a gift to us.

So, how can you get IT? Well, author and theologian Frederick Buechner writes, "The spirit of God, Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, is highly contagious." And, "When people are very excited, very happy, or very sad, you can catch it from them as easily as measles or a yawn. You can catch it from what they say or from what they do or just from what happens to the air of a room when they enter it without saying or doing anything." (Beyond Words, Daily Readings in the ABCs of Faith, © 2004, Harper Collins) He also goes on to say that it can be transmitted across great distances or time - you can catch the spirit from someone you've never met or who lived before you were born.

If IT is contagious, then it might be "best" to put ourselves in situations where we can catch IT. Participate in a small group, an outreach activity, daily devotions, youth group, worship regularly, have conversations with friends, co-workers, neighbors about their experiences of the Holy Spirit, reading the book IT, or perhaps best of all - hang out with children to catch IT from them! (see me to lead Children's Church every now and then)

May God be with you and open you up to the contagious power of IT!
Vikki

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Lord in the wake of the 7th anniversary of 9-11, the approach of hurricane Ike, Russia's presence in Georgia, economic fear, and the upcoming national elections........ Lord have mercy upon us and bring us to a place of greater faith.

Jorgen Moltman identified as the central statement of the church's primitive proclamation these words. "One might say that they're the first words of the newborn. "This Jesus, who was crucified, God has raised from the dead, and we are witnesses."(Acts 2:32)

Our main identity as Christians? "Witnesses to the resurrection..."

What are you witnessing? What kind of witness are you?

Let us pray for "kataryssomai." The Greek word for being "cut to the heart" is "kataryssomai." In Acts 2:37,38 Peter is preaching a key sermon to the people . The scriptures tell us the congregation was "... cut to the heart (kataryssomai) and said to Peter and to the other apostles, 'Brothers (and Sisters) ,what should we do? Peter said to them, 'Repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins might be forgiven; and you will receive the Holy Spirit."

Let us seek a renewed relationship individually and communally with our Lord. May the risen Jesus kataryssomai and bring us to a deeper place with our God.

See you on Sunday.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen

The Eye of the Hurricane

"Through the prayer of Rest, God places his children in the eye of the storm. When all around us is chaos and confusion, deep within we know stability and serenity. In the midst of struggle, we are still and relaxed." Claire Cloninger

Take some time today to reflect on God who He is and just what He can do. The Psalms are a great place to start. Praise God, for no matter what you are facing or what happens, He can and does accomplish great things.

From "Psalms for Praying"
Psalm 147

"Praise the Lord, Life of all life! Invite love into your heart! For Divine Love gives strength to the weak, courage to face their fears.

Divine Love brings peace to the heart, peace that is beyond our knowledge.
Divine Love cuts through the ignorance that fosters greed and arrogance, humbling and breaking open the heart.

Divine Love severs the veil that separates realms of the profane and sacred; Holiness radiates through all touched by Divine Love, a refining Fire!

Wisdom flows from the Heart of Divine Love to all receptive hearts nurtured in the silence. Yes, the Divine Word is written on every heart-scroll, a guide to pilgrims on the way.

May everyone awaken to Divine Love, that peace and integrity and assurance may be born again in every land.

O my soul, praise the Lord!"

Do you know who you are?

Psalms 100:3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

My wife was an elementary teacher in Nebraska several years ago when we were first married. She told me once, how sometimes, when her little students would have a quarrel amongst themselves, one would inevitably come running to her crying "So and so called me stupid!" My clever wife would always reply, "Well - are you stupid?" Without fail, that little red-faced, nine or ten year old would ponder for a moment, shrug back, look up at her and timidly say no. Well, okay then - so go and play! And just like that, the quarrel was over and recess would resume as if nothing happened.

We need to take a lesson from those young children! Our enemy loves to be mean and call us names - but we must take a moment and remember who we are! We're not stupid - we're not ugly - we're not defeated - we're not useless!

On the contrary! We are fearfully and wonderfully made! We are loved and cared for dearly! We're victorious! We are kings and priests! We have a divine purpose and calling to fulfill today!
Let's not allow anyone to dictate who or what we are! God has already made it very clear who we are - and we need to memorize what He said and not forget - especially when the accuser comes our way!

Heal My Sight

Matthew 20:29-34
As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
Jesus stopped and called them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. "Lord," they answered, "we want our sight." Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

We viewed the movie "Evan Almighty" last night. Evan Baxter is a newsman who runs for a political seat in congress on his "Change the World" platform. Following his election, he relocates his family to a huge house in a suburban Virginia neighborhood, purchases a new Hummer and sets out to change the world through his political influence and power. His wife mentions that their three sons have just said their bedtime prayers - pretty typical kid requests. Perhaps Evan should say a prayer too. So he does. On his knees - at bedside in the middle of the night. "Help me to change the world," he prays.

When God (Morgan Freeman) approaches Evan with the mandate from Genesis 6:14 and tells him to build an ark, Evan is shocked and runs away from this ludicrous task over and over. God delivers the lumber to his yard. God even delivers Evan the book, "How to Build Arks for Dummies." The story continues to build with Evan constantly running away from this divine appointment. God reminds Evan that he prayed to "change the world" and that God is providing him the opportunity to do it.

Faced with this God-given opportunity, he finally succumbs. He walks away from Washington's political powers and lets the entire world laugh, scoff and taunt his work while he determines to spend some time with his three sons to build this crazy ark.

In this political season, we're immersed in the political promises to change the world.

I suggest that today, you step away from the center stage of work, politics, economic pressures, and demands from society and focus on what God really wants you to see. Focus on the small change you can make right here, right now. Ask God to heal your sight.

Then respond by sharing an ARK (Act of Random Kindness).

Dear Jesus,
Heal my sight. Show me how to see others with 20/20 vision. Right here. Right now. Amen.
