And the peace of God...

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 ESV)

When you think about peace, what do you picture? Is it a mountain peak, a babbling brook, a new born baby? A friend of mine taught me to use a word for a month or even a year, to bring deliberate practice to your mind. You are to place that word in many places near you, where you will be reminded of it regularly. My word is peace.

We all want peace. We want peace in the world and in our countries so sometimes we fight for it, and we exercise our citizen rights taking political actions. We want peace in our schools, with our friends, in our families, and even in ourselves. People spend their lives working for peace. Unfortunately, true peace is not something that can be achieved, it can only be received.

True peace can only come from God (John 14:27). This peace affects our souls. Paul says that it will go deep into our hearts and minds.

Ironically, he brought us peace through an act that was not peaceful at all, the painful death of His son (Romans 5:9). As followers of Jesus, we should be the ones looked to when others need peace. Not because our surroundings are peaceful, but because our hearts and minds are at peace with God through the death of Christ on the cross. We know that our treasure is in heaven and we will one day reign with the one true Peace Maker.
