And Away We Go

For the 6th time in 5 years, I’m hitting the road with a group of students for a week of practice in Loving God, Loving People and Serving the World. On Sunday, July 17 a group of guys and I will travel to join two other churches from Minnesota in Rapid City, SD at a YouthWorks site. It’s a mission trip. But the week is about more than being missionaries and serving others, although we will do that for sure.

Sometimes people ask me why we travel and serve in a different city or town when there are so many needs in our own metro area. My response is this: the trip is about more than just serving others.

God does God’s best when we are shaken out of our complacency; taken away from the comforts of home, family and friends; and placed in new and often uncomfortable situations. We can hear God’s voice anew when we are focused solely on God instead of being distracted by our daily lives. We meet God anew as we build new relationships with people from other places and cultures. We learn a new thread in the story of God’s people and how we are intertwined in that story.

Thanks for keeping our group in your prayers. We can use prayers for safe travel; for positive group dynamics; for patience and perseverance as we eat, sleep, bathe and work with a large group of people in an unknown place. Pray that our hearts might be open to hearing what God has to say. Check out the daily updates on the GGCC website next week to see photos and read about what we are doing.

Another reason that we head out on mission trips is that it does help us to see the needs in our own metro area. It has been my joy to serve with students from our missional community in significant ways in the past few months at Extreme Community Makeover, Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives and the HALO Summer picnic in Five Points. May our hearts be broken for Jesus on this trip so that we will continue joining God to serve and bless the world wherever we are.

God bless you,
Vikki
