All in the Family

Dear Family,

“Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?’ Isaiah 58:7

“Family" is a loaded word. For some of us we cannot wait to spend more time with family. For others family is a source of wounds, people to attempt to avoid. Either way I hope your understanding of family membership grows.

Mother Teresa said, ”The greatest sin was to draw the circle of family too small.” Jesus was always bumping back the boundaries of family to cast a larger vision of family.

Currently there are seven of your God's Grace Community Church family members on the ground in Nicaragua. The members of the team are Glennda Nelson, Lois Autterson, Andrea Heshmati, Jude Delhierro, Conor Evans, Terry Luce, and myself, Pastor Dave. Pray for us, that we might be grasped by the power of Christ who sees one large human family. May we come back with a testimony that shatters our prior understanding of the limits of family.

In this generation we are learning that as the world has grown smaller, we cannot “hide “ from our “own kin." On ministry trips to Nicaragua, our leader Brad Corrigan of “Love Light & Melody “ often asks, "How would you treat the world if they all had the same last name as you?" The truth in Isaiah says the entire human family is our “kin.” We do all have the same last name.

Prayers: For the team in Nicaragua, and for all who travel this summer to see kin. May the image of family sprawl and spew forth fresh vision.

In worship on Sunday, the team will share stories and images from our week in the sacred space of Nicaragua.

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
