After, He Rested

I’ve been asked “Davis, you must have it so good. Only having to work three days a week and having the remaining 4 to do whatever you would like.” Yes, three 12 hour shifts sounds nice, but it still is 40 hours a week. With 4 days of freedom, I’ve noticed that I still don’t find the time to actually go and take some R&R. For some time it seems that God would prefer me to be a YES man. I feel as though I should be saying yes to every request and go 1,000 miles per hour to “experience life.” In some cases, that is true. I don’t want to be some couch potato or not take risks/experiences and regret it in the future. I believe that is the thought process of my generation; to go go go, experience everything, move from one place to another, and don’t say no. Honestly, it is exhausting. After some thought, I believe God wants us to yes, experience the life he has privileged us with, but it is also important to take time to take a step back and use some free time for self-care. As I write this, I am currently in the middle of nowhere Texas, with no work obligations, a full stomach, a beautiful view of a glistening lake with deer, cattle, and a stubborn jackass walking about. Besides making a trip to go visit my sister in Waco, I have done nothing more than relax with my family for a week. Nowhere to be and all day to get there. These past 6 days have been amazing and a great opportunity to take a step back to rest. God spent time to create the earth. After, he rested. He created the Sabbath for man, not man for the Sabbath.

“There remains, then a Sabbath-rest for the people of God. For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest.” Hebrews 4: 9-11

So, slow down. Take time to appreciate a little R&R when given the opportunity. The Sabbath doesn’t always have to be one day.
