Acquainted

Dear Mourners,

They have attacked and killed in Brussels. The number of known dead is still being calculated. We mourn once more.

“Emily Dickinson, attracted to Paul’s confession of ‘weakness and much fear and trembling,’ his knowing ‘nothing but Christ crucified,’ speaks in her poems of daily crucifixion, of ‘never –nearer Crucifixion.’ Near the end of her life, she wrote in a letter : ‘When Jesus tells us about his Father, we distrust him. When he shows us his Home, we turn away, but when he confides to us that he is “acquainted with Grief,” we listen, for that also is an Acquaintance of our own.’ “ -- Kathleen Norris “The Closer Walk,” New York : Riverhead Books, 1996, pp. 26-27

In times like this, during this Holiest of Weeks, we are reminded that sometimes all we have is the hope of the one “acquainted with grief.” The one who will not leave us alone nor abandon us under any circumstance, even death. Let us pause to reflect anew into the “Mystery of Christ.” (Ephesians 3:4)

Let us pray to not “lose heart in the face of our sufferings. "(Ephesians 3:13)

Lord, embrace us this Holy week in the everlasting arms of the God who loved unto death, breaking the bonds of death.

Prayer—Gracious God, in this holiest of weeks, we marvel at your love for us. You did not forsake us, even in the worst of our sin. Even when we betrayed your only Son and hung him on a cross, you did not desert us. Forgive us our terrible sin. Work with us, even in our unspeakable evil. Restore us to yourself. For us, there is no other way except the way of your total, complete, infinitely forbearing love. Amen

We gather this Holy Week:
...Maundy Thursday as we serve at the Meadowbrook Assisted Living Center 3-5pm
...Good Friday for worship at Confluence ministry at 7pm
…Holy Saturday Prayer walk on east Colfax, carpooling at 10am
…Easter worship at 9 and 10:30 at Rock Canyon High School.
See the web site for more details.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
