A Place of Holy Mystery

What are the places that you go?  I go to the store, the library, or on a walk with my dog.  Sometimes I go to the Rockies’ game and sometimes I go to a place where I think negative thoughts.  In the Bible text we will consider in worship tomorrow morning at 9 and 10:30, Eugene Peterson’s The Message shares where the people were after Jesus raised a widow’s son from the dead:

They all realized they were in a place of holy mystery, that God was at work among them. They were quietly worshipful—and then noisily grateful, calling out among themselves, “God is back, looking to the needs of his people!” The news of Jesus spread all through the country. Luke 7:16-17

When do we realize that we have been in a place of holy mystery and that God is at work around us?  Or do we?  I wonder how often I miss that all around me is holy mystery and God is at work.  Thursday afternoon at a Denver city park on 36th Ave and Vine St was certainly a place of holy mystery when GGCC threw a party for Rev Kelly’s Open Door after school kids.  There was laughter, ice cream, trash, paint, games, hugs and life.  But I think that one is easy to identify.

I’m not sure I always identify being in a place of holy mystery when times are difficult, when loved ones die or relationships are broken.  When lives are lost due to natural disasters like tornadoes and flooding or human conflict it doesn’t seem like a holy place at all.  But I know and trust that God is certainly at work even in those places.  Maybe that’s really the only time I’m in that place of holy mystery – when I recognize that God is at work.

I think I would like to be in that place more often.

May we begin to realize that right now we are in a place of holy mystery and that God is at work among us.  May we be quietly worshipful and noisily grateful.  Then, the good news of Jesus will certainly spread.

God bless you,
