A New Year

Happy New Year to you!

This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!  (Psalms 118:24).

Today is the day to start fresh anew, to commit to reading your daily devotions booklet, to seek out Jesus to celebrate all the blessings bestowed upon you, to finish your Christmas thank you’s, begin a savings program, or start that exercise program.  But how can you make those things different from other years so that you continue to carry out things started with your best intentions?  Mother Theresa reminds us, “to keep the lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.”

God is faithful by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1Corinthians 1:9) By seeking God’s assistance, our spirits will be made anew, and our commitments will be refocused to activities that make a difference in God’s kingdom.  We need time for God, ourselves, our jobs, our families, and for our physical well being.  So many demands in what seems like such little time.  Setting a specific time for the important tasks and objectives in your life will assure you commit to those objectives and eventually they will become part of your daily life.  It is also important not to make a list to over commit, because that will just lead to failure, which we’ve all experienced before.  But rather, schedule  a commitment you can realistically keep and stick with it. It doesn’t have to be a total transformation, just a step in the right direction.

Sow a thought, reap an action;

Sow an action, reap a habit;

Sow a habit, reap a character;

Sow a character, reap a destiny.

-Samuel Smiles

I wish for you this New Year a chance to try something new and to experience God in a way perhaps you never have before.  Make 2010 a year to remember in a positive light.  May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!  (Psalms 29:11)

Research has shown one way to make yourself feel better, is to spend time helping someone else. To that thought, I invite you to re-listen to the song by Diana Ross, Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand

Now try it, it works!

Dear God, Teach us to experience you in a new refreshed light as we start a new year, full of possibilities, struggles, and hopes and fears and changes we can’t even begin to imagine.  Bless those serving our country overseas and keep them strong, safe and healthy, provide freedom to the oppressed, bless those unemployed seeking employment, and comfort those with health problems.  Guide us to lend a hand to others and provide a loving touch or a comforting ear to those around us.  We ask you to please touch our lives anew to help us live our lives according to your will.  Amen.
