A Fishing Story

Dear Fisher people,

And Jesus said to them. ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.'  Matthew 4:19

The good news begins in the heart of God, in God's determination to have a family. God shows a relentless resolve not to leave the world to its own devices. Think of the Bible as a long story of God's refusal to leave us to ourselves. For Christians, Jesus is the supreme act of God's eternal self –communication, God's determination to have family at all costs.

Friendship is a primary means by which God speaks of “relentless resolve” for my life. Over the last few years, God has reached into my life through the friendship of Dan Gonzales. I coach tennis with Dan at Mountain Vista High School.  Rare would be the day that Dan does not ask me in some form or another, “What has God spoken to you today? Let me tell you what he has told me...”  Clearly the love of God shared through scripture has been at work within Dan, inviting him into the larger family of God for a long time.

Dan is the son of famed tennis legend Poncho Gonzales, who was the Jackie Robinson of tennis.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancho_Gonzales.  Struggle and fortune have both played a part in the Gonzales story. I hope you can be in worship this Sunday when Dan and I share the sermon proclamation.

Prayers: For Dan Gonzales and all who proclaim the gospel. For the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy among us.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
