A Divine Function

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Happy Mother’s Day. Blessed be all the mothers among us.

In reality, “mother” is not a name. It is a divine function. “To mother” is to be the bearer of life. From the creation story in Genesis to Mary the mother of Jesus saying “let it be” (Luke 1:38), it is mothers who have been the principle bearers of God's creation.

Mothers understand the significance of the birthing power of Deuteronomy 6:5-7, “… love the Lord your God with all your heart ….keep these words ….and recite them to your children each day.”

As you observe this “Mother's day,” give thanks to each woman who has been a steward of these words. A woman does not have to have given physical birth to a human being to be a bearer of new life in the world. Any woman who has heeded the words of Deuteronomy and nurtured you to “love the Lord’ has served in a mothering function in your life. Give thanks for that woman and the blessing she is to you each day.

Thanks be to God for all women who have been faithful to bearing life among us through the living Word of God.

See you on Sunday.

Still in one peace,

David J. Jensen
